How can I lose some weight?

i never thought I'd be doing because I am usually an active person but lately my life has been spiraling downward and I haven't been treating myself the right way thus gaining ten pounds, so I was just wondering what it would take to lose this weight. I don't mean to sound stupid but I really never had to lose weight before so what can I do to get myself healthy again? like what would be the proper exercise for losing at least 10 pounds if you know what I mean?
