Noone (man/woman) wears a cup while attacking and it's not just effective only against guys just because they have balls! I am sure a kick to the groin is still gonna work against a girl.
+1000 points for using Napoleon Dynamite as a reference.
I think legit self defence courses for women can be very handy. Especially if you are small, weak, or never learned such skills.
I also feel that firearms handling, first aid, fire extinguisher use, and some basic wilderness survival skills couldn't hurt. Heck, a lot of people these days travel by car, with no tools, emergency supplies or plan.
That being said, like all things in life, there will be someone to con it.
Ok, so you know one person who went to a shitty class and then decided that all defense classes are like that?
From what I can tell, in most GOOD self defense classes you learn how people are most likely to attack you, the weak points of those attacks (i. e. how to get yourself free or how to use a bad grip against the attacker), how to use the weight of the attacker against them, and how to successfully confuse and/or hit them back hard enough for you to be able to run away or get help.
The real issue with "women's" self defense courses are that they treat women with kid gloves. There are no kid gloves in the real world. Attackers are violent, unrelenting, uncaring, and usually men. Training against someone who will not fully utilize their superior strength and size against you is setting you up for failure. Women like to feel comfortable in what they do, but being assaulted is anything but comfortable. Prioritizing their comfort over realism is giving a false sense of security. If you don't make them sweat and bleed, you're doing them a disservice.
I'm a very experienced martial artist and I couldn't handle myself well in the streets when fighting bigger guys. With time I've learned to actually avoid fighting and use wits to take the best out of any given situation.
Self defence courses are a waste of time. As adrenaline kicks in you start to shake, can't control your breathing and even tear up, let alone remember your self defence courses. The best defence in the real world is the ability to stay calm and be witty.
I'm really grateful that it was mandatory for our grade 9 gym class to learn self defense. They brought it a special self defense teacher. It was a short lesson but at least we all got exposure to a bit of self defense.
I also remember the teacher telling us to yell fire instead of rape because no one would take you seriously otherwise... I think that reflects so poorly on society.
I agree just join a fight club they'll teach you style and as long as you stick at it no man or woman will be able to mess with you. There's this female champion boxer that goes to mine and she can spar with the biggest men in the place! and the thing is she's small and not that strong but damn she still gives them a run for their money and she shrugs off their hits like they're nothing it's mental
In a real life scenario, must people wouldn't know what to do. These courses aren't about teaching basic tactics of self defense, but more of actually being trained and mentally prepared to perform these self defense tactics in a real life scenario while under high stress.
I actually learned a lot from the classes I attended; how to get out of headlock, what to do if someone grabs you from behind, what parts of the body to go for when defending yourself. But I suppose it depends on what class you take or where you take them
Aye I've seen this, major respect to the discipline, I did karate for 5-6, and went to a odd mma school for 2-3 years I sadly never had the persistent nature to keep it up, best and only thing I got from it was to never raise a hand/fist in anger, I always feel I never learnt any actual instinctual self defence until its come to the few times I've needed it, certainly no chuck Norris but has paid off ha
It’s probably a confidence thing more than actual training.
Also if they were to go to a proper martial arts course there’s sort of an expectation that they be remotely capable at it. The self defense course isn’t judgey about your technique.
That’s what I think the appeal is: participation trophies and confidence.
The best thing for “women’s self defense” in general is just do anything; fight in any capacity, even if you’re shit at it. If you just make it difficult to pull of the attack and draw attention that’s the most effective thing at making an attacker bail out.
Its training that everyone needs not just women. Sure you could kick someone but what if they grab your leg and possibly break it? What if you bite someone and they knock your teeth out? You need to know "how" and "when" and that's where training comes in handy
No harm in Learning to Defend yourself Today in this Wicked and Wild World We live in Here, dear. People Pay for many things, Why not this Course, Of Course? xx
Most of them are bullshit, because as you said, learning how to fight effectively takes time, and you're better off just plain learning a martial art or two. It inspires nothing but false confidence and complacency.
It's also a skill that has to be CONSTANTLY developed and maintained: going on a course and expecting to be able to defend yourself against stronger, larger opponents for life is ridiculous.
I learned that McDonald's straws are strong enough to go through a human hand at a self-defense class. I don't know that too many people could tell you that otherwise.
Also, pepper spray is illegal in Canada. Makes me feel better to know that I can jab someone with a McDonald's straw hard enough to get them to let me go.
I think that it's a great thing to women to learn to fight, just in case an attack. Although, I agree with you on the fact that it shouldn't just be "oh kick them in the balls" or "spray them with pepper spray". If someone is paying for these classes, they should get their money's worth.
It should also be “oh, just kick them in the vagina.” It’s baffling to me how people don’t realize that vagina kicks are just as devastating as ball kicks. Nobody assumes the attacker will be female.
I sort of feel like your mind is made-up about this already. But in my opinion, defending yourself has little to do with your training. It has everything to do with avoiding danger in the first place. Being aware is your best defense against big bad men.
You're better off with a martial arts sport like boxing where you actually learn to fight instead of dancing against imaginary opponents who stand still.
Also typically men are physically stronger in many scenarios. You'd need to build up some strength on top of learning to fight in order to have a real impact in the situation if one would arise.
I recommend sticking with the obvious, a kick in the balls or a pepper spray / taser / whatever is legal in your country.
Boxing? Please forgive me, but ROTFL. The female physique is utterly unsuited to boxing, because women do not have the necessary upper-body strength, or the skeletal structure and muscle attachment points to get the necessary strength, no matter how hard they work. Also, boxing teaches someone how to fight one opponent. Traditional karate teaches men and women how to kill, or cripple for life, with one strike. It is also designed to engage multiple assailants. While a female boxer will deliver a couple of punches that a large man will swat away as if they were flies, a female karate-ka will send him to the morgue with one strike.
@cth96190 No matter what kind of martial arts we are talking about it's all a matter of strength. The woman could be black belt on a dozen martial arts but if he faces some big ass strong man the result is obvious. Based by this she is better off practicing how to run away from such encounters instead of thinking which martial art is the best. I've done karate myself and that you're saying that it has the potential to kill someone in one hit you are not clearly talking about the same martial art. Traditional martial arts are very often practiced against thin air and even actual contests are strongly restricted to certain sets of rules and you often only face opponents that use similar techniques you are familiar with. Boxing was just an example of a more free form martial art where you get more practice on taking hits and delivering them and ofc it is about facing a single opponent. If there's more than one opponent for a single woman it's game over before it has even begun.
Karate is about technique and speed. Mass x velocity = impact energy. It is also the nature of the blow is what matters. A woman could, for example, crush or rip his trachea, which is a kill. She could compress his carotid artery. She could put her fingers into his eye sockets, then use that grip to pull him down and break his neck. She could break the arm that took a swing at her, then follow that by breaking a couple of his ribs. My own daughter did that to someone who took a swing at her. She could deliver a side thrust kick to a knee, which would destroy the joint. In summary, there are a multitude of things that a competent female karate-ka could do for which great physical strength is not necessary. I question the nature of what you were taught re karate. There is US style sport karate and there is real karate. This is what real karate looks like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAzX7dUDDfM
@cth96190 First you say that a woman is unable to build the necessary strength to have enough impact on her blows to cause any actual damage and as soon as she puts on a karate belt she starts breaking ribs? and performing a combo and throwing a person bigger than her around while holding him from his eyesockets?
This is dreaming, the woman is far better off running off instead of facing the opponent. The point of self-defence is to get away from situations without getting harmed. not beating your opponent into a coma.
self defense courses don't seem to teach real life scenarios. in front of a robber holding a knife or gun, the average person will have cold feet and won't be able to do anything. you also don't know if they have friends standing-by in the area incase something goes wrong either. the moment you get him into a submissive hold you learned from class, his friend (s) will come running in and shank you multiple times in the back, or smash your head with a baton and it's game over.

It's usually not just that. The first thing someone always says if they get attacked is they'd kick em in the balls. But what if say, they wore a cup?
The one I took had a heavy emphasis on taking your attacker down and deflecting any attacks they might try.

I guess I don't understand why they specifically sell it as "women's self-defense." Take up krav maga and spare yourself the pandering.
My thoughts exactly. I've been doing judo and karate for almost 15 years, it cost me nothing and I have used it effectively in several scenarios.
You started when you were 3?
I have been doing Judo and Krav for a while now and I feel physically and mentally ready for most attack
Yep. In the good, oddly relevant words of Mr. Miyagi, "father teach"

In some parts of Japan police use judo, not guns to control criminals you have to dedicate yourself to an art form to be good at it.

I do judo as well, and I was amazed to watch a cop take down an unruly drunk guy in downtown Osaka because I didn't know they had that training.
Apparently cops in China use kung fu to subdue suspects, but I've never seen it.
Ha kung fu is one of the disciplines they taught, that was well beyond my level though ha, sadly, and on that, Damn China! That's badass ha
@Dreku you are both elevated to badass status we need this on gag.
Ha your nutts monkey! Fucking worst joke I've ever made, I'm just an oddball :)
@Dreku 😁
