why are you paying for those classes? women's self defense classes are way way more in depth than that. if a guy pins you from behind the class teaches you the best way to break the pin and escape or combat it if needed. if he starts choking you and is to close for you to hit him in the balls it shows you the best way to get him back a pace so you can fight him off.
Jeah i would rather recommand you start a real fighting sport like jiu jitzu kickboxing or judo if you want to feel save... this self defense stuff is not worth it... i mean even if you kick them in balls... it doesn't matter if you never ever work out because than it doesn't hurt at all XD... and remember... those guys know what hurts them too... so just go with a real fighting sport from the beginning...(and yes it takes years)
i mean, well if you kick a guy in the balls, it doesn't matter whether you work out or not, it's still going to hurt us enough to incapacitate us, but that's only if you land the kick. so yeah, i agree that girls should take up 'real' fighting sports cuz in the case that an attacker catches your leg, you need to know what to do then.
@QuarterNote Not at all! It might incapacitate you but not all people! There are more people out there then you think who can take a pounding down there without getting incapacitated including me!
Actually, that's a very good point lol I never really stopped to think what they would entail but yes that definitely is not worth paying for. But to be fair, you can also just look a lot of the stuff up on youtube and kind of tell when someone is legitimate or fake by looking up similar videos and comparing to each other.
If you go to an actual martial arts studio for that you could learn some really good things actually. I agree that many are a ripoff though, yet, they could help in being less scared in the public, especially since many women participating in such courses are probably unreasonably scared in the first place. You should of course always be careful, but don't go crazy
I would definitely go take karate lessions from a good karate teacher instead of those. Or kick boxing etc. Because they will actually teach you how to kick someone's ass. If you have kids I definitely recommend getting them in while they are young cause it teaches them respect and restraint and discipline etc. Also they get a black belt at a younger age if they follow it though. So defiantly choose that over some defiance class I can look up on you tube for free
If you go to a real martial arts studio that offers it, they will teach you actual maneuvers. But you're right, a lot of businesses out there are rip-offs, and something as in-fad as women's self-defense. They will tell you nothing you couldn't have thought of yourself. If a tiny girl is up against a big guy, a kick to the balls isn't always enough. Guys are ready for that shit.
Not all courses are certified trained people. Scams are everywhere nowadays. But these course do help girls especially those that are thought by former professor fighters and formers coaches. Not some idiot trying to make a quick buck. My sister used to go to them. It saved her life when she almost got robbed by street thug.
Learning some actual fighting skills would absoloutly help out, as would getting a gun and learning how to shoot it... those classes like your talking about are bullshit... Unless you get attacked by the slowest weakest dumbest fucker who gets knocked out cold with a slap...
They're more about selfconfidence than anything else..
I'm 200cm tall and 120kg, practiced karate for 7 years and practiced martial arts with women that went to world championships. The strength and reach difference is not something an ordinary girl can overcome, even if you cheat.
Pepperspray isn't a bad idea, but illegal in a lot of places. Yelling and running might be a better alternative.
I think it's a good idea and it should actually be taught in schools along with first aid. In theses unfortunate time's I think it's extremely important but people should learn how to keep themselves safe and protected
I don't know any details. It doesn't really seem like you can develop much muscle memory in just a few courses like that.
There are several ladies who take Brazilian Ju Jitsu at my studio.
I mean they really can't hold there own against the men but I'm sure several of the techniques they are learning may come in handy. I couldn't say they could definitely stop an angry man attacking them with full venom and power but in many lesser situations they could defend themselves somewhat.
I see where you are coming from and I mostly agree, however this is an instance where I think anything is better than nothing. If a woman otherwise wouldn't take precautions for herself then it can be somewhat beneficial. I'm aware of instances where classes like these have actually saved a woman's life so to completely say they're worthless is stretching.
As long as it's not a scam, I think it's a good idea for women and men to know how to defend themselves. Skip the courses marketed as "women's self defense" and go for actual martial arts. My sister did kick-boxing, but you can choose from a variety of martial arts from different cultures around the world, like karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Krav Maga, wrestling, boxing, etc.
Self defense classes are great. But people should look up and research the specific place they’re taking classes from. Cuz yeah, I’m some cases it’s bullshit.
I think what the classes instill the most is the fact that women CAN and SHOULD fight back and scream bloody murder when there is no chance to flee. Having trained for the occasion helps you feel confident and calm enough to react appropriately and defend yourself. some of us have it naturally, some of us need to train for it.
I think a "Real" Self defense course is a very good thing for any one to learn not just women.. On that same token though I have seen some of them as rip offs that dont teach anything useful.

1. As many point out, guns will dominate martial arts 99% of the time. A combo of both is likely even more dominating, but would be even harder than a black belt to perfect. 2. A self defense course taught should say to kick in balls or vagina and should designate weak spots in both men and women. Women can in fact attack other women, no denial there.

In your example, yes, that does sound like a rip off. Where I’m from, every year the local police will host self-defense training for women in the community for free and will not only provide a hands-on experience to practice self-defense maneuvers/tricks, but also inform where majority of attacks have been occuring in our community and at what time they tend to occur.
Every women should be able to defend herself just in case something happened to her. Paying money to take courses or not it doesn't matter because not everyone knows how to act in such situations either they start panicking or stand there defenseless. I think learning some techniques from someone will help you to remember the lessons you take and your body will start automatically reacting. This just my opinion and what i think.
