Is it actually bad to be underweight?

Firstly, Asians have different proportion of lean mass to body fat (less bone and muscle mass than other races).
So Asians are actually about 2 BMI points "fatter" than other races.
Which is why an Asian person with 17 BMI doesn't look as skinny as a person of another race with the same BMI.
As for health impacts.
The only significant long-term impact of undernutrition is osteoporosis, this is especially true for women due to two reasons-
1) Estrogen influences bone density, and low-fat hampers estrogen metabolism, indirectly contributing to osteoporosis.
2) Bones need some stress, because "stress" (for example caused by carrying extra weight) promotes bone remodeling, the less stress you place on your body, the less need for extra bone formation, which will eventually lead to weak bones.
You can counter the second point by doing strength exercises and thus placing stress on your bones, but the estrogen deficiency can't really be helped.
As for other impacts, there really aren't many.
In general, it is always better to have less subcutaneous fat, especially for cardiovascular health.
Most health impacts of undernutrition are actually caused by the primary cause of undernutrition, such as anorexia, smoking, or various malabsorption disorders.
It's possible to have a diet that is nutritionally complete, but lacks in calories.
BMI down to 17 is considered mild undernutrition and is generally safe, BMI of 16 and less is considered severe undernutrition, and that's where the bad health effects start taking place.
Not unless you're massively underweight. There have been tons of lab tests done on rats where they feed them in three ways:
- Slightly more calories than they need
- Exactly the calories that they need
- Slightly less calories than they need
While super skinny, the rats that are slightly underfed not only live longer, but they remain more active and perform better in their later stages of life. So not only does undereating give you more years, but it gives you more meaningful years.
It's a bummer. Food tastes good and eating is fun.
Sweets are my problem lol
Hey, I feel you. I'm pretty damn fit and I go to the gym every day. But you know, not a lot of people know this but it's a struggle for me. Up until I was 32, I was pretty fucking fat. But I made a change, I go to the gym daily, and I eat a lot of spinach smoothies. Does it taste good? No... but it's clearly good for me. Why can't a spinach smoothie taste like a cheeseburger? You know that actually brings something to mind... I do a lot of volunteer work and working with the homeless, I work with a lot of drug addicts. Some of them told me that they had friends who fixed their addictions (cigarettes, even heroin) with the help of hypnosis. Like now, they not only don't crave it, but the thought of touching those things makes them ill. They had mentioned that people use hypnosis for weight loss too and I didn't think much of it. I wonder if people can be hypnotized into loving spinach smoothies and hating pumpkin pie?
Lol i wonder that too
Underweight is relative and many people are obese, do yes to an extent it is ok to be underweight
90 at 5 ft 2 is like 110 at 5 ft 6
It’s not a big deal
Shirt people weigh less bc they are short. A 5 ft 20 person at 90 is really bad but not at 5 2. 🤷♀️
But it’s not healthy to starve yourself to get there and or stay there
Yes, being underweight is bad. It's okay to be skinny, and she likely has a small bone structure and is toned with low body fat, but being very underweight is damaging both short and long term. I used to be severely underweight (14 BMI) my vision would go out, no energy, dizzy spells, heart palpitations, the entire works. You need a healthy balance.
No you look great girl! I think it depends on your diet though. As long as your eating and getting nutrients in you should be fine.
You dont look anorexic or unhealthy

Being very underweight and very low fat is damaging to you in the long term, just like with obesity. It increase risks of osteoporosis, reduced immune system function and quite a few reproductive problems in women.
Would it be okay to weigh 90 pounds for somebody who is 5’1
She will have a good diet and a lot of Asians are just naturally that small with the diets they have on that side of the world a lot healthier then what people eat in the west
A would think so ye that it really small but do you mind sharing a picture of what you look like now because you must look perfectly fine with your current weight just send it in a pm if your comfortable doing so a can't imagine you needing to lose weight at your current size specially not that much weight there is no need
Underweight can be bad for your health the same way being obese can be bad for your health. I don't think the woman in the picture is underweight. 🖤🤓
One of my best friends was anorexic. So yes, it’s bad to be underweight.
Nope.
Just unhealthy to be over weight.
Whatever you are, you are better!
Dont compare or envy others.
In that process you will loose your true self.
As long as it's not impacting your health and causing lasting damage I wouldn't have thought so no.
Being skinny but not overly so is healthy as studies have shown on rats and people who eat low calorie diets like the people of okinawa
BMI is seriously flawed.
I guess so
I think anything above 22 should be considered chubby because i am 23 and am chubby
It can be situationally bad. Fat dampens physical trauma, isolates from cold and works as a buffer against some parasites.
I don't think so...
