"Masked depression" is not- -as some people might believe- a person masking their depression. This was typically called "smiling depression". It is when physical symptoms "mask" the actual cause (s) of someone's depression. It was one of several terms including "latent depression", "vegetative depression", and larvate depression". The term- very popular in the 1970's and 80's- is seldom used nowadays.
