Thanks to covid, I lost a good friend today. Not because he had it, but because staff shortages meant they couldn't type his blood in time. Even as he lay dying he kept yelling "be positive" to us.

My blood group is O and I'm O -. I do give blood a few times a year. But it still seems like a catch 22. They can give me blood to anyone regardless of their blood type. So hospitals use it when they don't know a persons blood type. But I can only be given O - and it's the first blood type to run out if the hospital has a shortage.

If everybody was a blood donor, they would have a card that states their blood type and even if they were unconscious, it would be in their wallet.

Also most people's medical records will have that info and it should be accessible to hospital staff.

I do, I was tested when I was born and mom kept my records. I also donated blood once and so I got tested again (it's A+)
