Having a mental disorder, myself, I don't pose as a danger to society. I take my medication every day until the day my soul leaves this shell which I am currently using in order to survive another 20+ years. If the person has been diagnosed with a more severe mental illness and poses as a danger to society decides that the medication that was prescribed for them to take won't help in any way, then yes, I would agree that they need to be locked up. Not all of us who are diagnosed with a mental illness/disorder are going to somehow acquire a gun and go out into society murdering family members and other innocent people including our children/grandchildren. It pisses me off each time I read that the person who has murdered others has a mental illness. Yes, there are those who do have an illness; however, they could also have a brain disorder, were abused as a child, numerous reasons why a person goes out and commits such a horrible act. It's unfortunate that so many innocent people and children are victims of a loony tune who needs to be on strong medication and should be put behind locked doors aren't being locked up. There are thousands if not millions on Earth who (excuse my opinion) should have been swallowed.

I think a lot of this mental
illness, is in part encouraged by not being steered in the right direction, and the kids being left to their own devices.

Of course, this is absolutely NOT a valid excuse to commit such a sickening crime, everyone is responsible for their actions, and there is definitely an obvious alternative.

The reason I mention the lack of education, is because a lot of kids could take a better road with the right input, even if they do have a predisposition to commit crimes.

I always thought that by the time it gets to the point of “taking meds” society has already lost half the battle. Redirecting a kid at this end stage, is going to be so much harder, than doing it a few years before, I would much rather see a kid properly evaluated and re-educated, long before the point that they need medication.

I don't think they should be locked up in jails and prisons but I would agree that the criteria for confining people involuntarily in state hospitals should be expanded to include these chronic schizophrenics and other psychotics who are noncompliant with treatment.

This is something that depends. If someone does something wrong and he or she knows that it was wrong... Then they need to be locked up period. No doubt about it

Sure, if they have medication to take and its there for them. Not so sure, if they have a illness and can't hold a job to pay for it, so if they can't afford the medication would that count the same as refusing to take it? Depending on the type of mental illness, holding a job may be tough. As long as they have free medication if they refuse, lock them up.

I doubt a majority of mental illness stems from birth. I think most comes from their environment.

Yes some mental disorder/ illnesses might come from a person's environment, but mine didn't. Now I may or may not have been born with it, though there's a chance that an extremely high fever at 2 months of age may have altered my brain in some way. My previous comments about putting people who might be a threat to our already fuk'd up society should be placed in jail for not taking their medications should've been worded differently stating that a short or extended "vacation" in a state facility (in state or out) might be a much better idea. The system has already failed us here in the U. S. A. Not going to argue this until it festers a huge bubble, however we are not perfect and in some way may or may not have some sort of mental illness that we don't know we have. Just saying is all
