Why is fit only one letter different from fat?

Fit came from fitted or fittest, like survival of the fittest. Originally you outfit a group, say soldiers for a war. That's where we get the term outfit, because when they were well outfitted they would often have the same uniforms. And a group that was well outfitted was fitter than another one. Hence the word fittest. And that came to mean in condition, or properly trained for action. Then it was shortened to fit.

Fat was from Germanic, used to mean things lime stuffed or crammed. It also had a longer spelling. And it was shorten in Middle English to mean prosperous or abounding in comforts. After that. Its a short leap to those prosperous people being called fat for their most easily identifiable characteristic. Aka, their weight
