Jaw surgery? Should I go with it? Opinions?

I hate reading long questions as much as the rest of you so I'll warn you ahead of time that this question is somewhat long. I promise you it's worth it though and I'd really appreciate you read this and give your opinion.

I've had an under-bite for as long as I can remember. I had braces when I was younger and other assorted orthodontic contraptions but they knew when I was young that the only way it would get fixed was surgery. They had to wait until I stopped growing though because obviously there's no point fixing the problem then having my jaw grow back to where it was before.

So now that I'm definitely done growing I have a decision to make. Its a huge time commitment and there are a bunch of cons to doing the surgery, but the results could be great.

Here is basically what I'll have to do: I have to get my wisdom teeth removed and a palate extender for a bit to prep for the braces. Then I have to wear braces for 1-2 years (yuk!) getting my teeth in the right position. After that time is up I'll have the surgery and have the braces for another 4-6 months or so and that's it. The effects of the surgery (swelling) only last 2 weeks or so.

Insurance will cover most of the process so money isn't really an option. I'll be a senior in college now and I wouldn't get the braces until next summer, but I plan on going to a 2 year grad school so you understand what I'll be working around in my life.

Without me giving my opinion I'm curious to see how other people react to this. Would you go along with it? What concerns would you have? Can you even tell from looking at me? Would it be worth it? Whatever opinion you have I'd love to hear it because this is a really tough decision for me. Thanks for reading! :)
