I can't calm down I got dental sedation soon again, has anyone got any tips?

I gotta be sedated again soon for more dental surgery I remember this happening 2 years ago an i had a severe panic attack while they was putting the sedation in and I'd took valium 2 hours prior but been told to take it 1 hour before this time and my propranolol early in the morning. I'm terrified I remember well nothing after I hugged the nurse an come round with cotton wool in my mouth my memory had been wiped. I'm agoraphobic an have severe anxiety this is why I have to be sedated. :( I'm not looking forward to this...

Ah man, dental sedation can be super scary. Here's some tips that might help:

- Talk to your dentist about upping the valium dose if you're still feeling really anxious. No point risking a panic attack.

- Bring some comfy headphones and load up a funny podcast so you have something distracting to listen to.

- Ask if you can bring a favorite stuffed animal or blanket from home - the familiar things can help calm your nerves.

- Remind yourself that dentists do this all the time with no problems. You're in good hands with professionals.

- Breathe slowly and try muscle relaxation techniques like tensing/releasing your toes while they get you set up.

- Let the nurse know you're nervous - they're used to it and want to reassure you. Talking helps take your mind off it.

- Think happy thoughts about chilling at home with popcorn or gaming after it's done. Something fun to look forward to.

Communicate ahead of time with the dentist. Establish a couple basic methods to indicate your needs, since you won't be able to speak... (Unless you and they know sign-language)

Things you need to convey to them:

* Your level of comfort/discomfort.

* When discomfort turns to pain.

* If you're choking, or if you need irrigation/vacuuming.

Use one hand for questions or needs, and the other hand for emergencies or to indicate the level of discomfort/pain.

It sucks all around, but (most?) Dentists just want to get the job done as quickly and painlessly as possible. Know your limits and what to expect, and communicating with them can get you through it more comfortably.
