Most of the time (other than obviously feeling tired), I'll find myself getting emotionally overwhelmed extremely easily. I'm running on 3 hrs of sleep right now, it's not even noon yet and I already feel like I'm going to have an emotional breakdown over nothing. 😫
1 yI've had chronic insomnia now since I was 13. I usually go two days with almost no sleep and then by the third night, I usually take a sleeping pill. I just hate how it makes me feel the next day so I try to reserve them for Fridays. Although my mom MADE me take the sleeping pill when I lived at home, and my fiancé does pressure me a little to take it after two nights of no or little sleep. But I've actually grown to function quite well without sleep. If anything, it gives me a lot more time to get a lot more stuff accomplished!

That is impressive. I'm barely comprehensible/intelligible even when I've had some sleep.
You know, I used to have the worst insomnia. Occasionally I still do get it, if I'm stressed. But mostly not. I used to be able to go to bed, and literally not sleep at all. It was hellish.
I'm glad to say, that I've pretty much cured it in the past few years. Takes me roughly half an hour to get to sleep. Then I sleep all night. Well, unless I need a pee. Cause I'm getting old, like. - 1 y
@Levin Well I guess because I went through puberty suffering from insomnia, that my body adjusted, and it actually helped me to graduate High school in 2 years, and graduate college in 2 years 3 mos, because I had so much extra time to do work, and to study for CLEP tests, so I didn't have to take a lot of required tests. I’m a naturally good test taker so as long as I have a cursory knowledge of the subject matter, I’ll easily pass a test on it. (Especially when they're multiple choice! I’m getting better, as far as sleeping more, but it’s still rough to go more than 2 nights with only about an hour or so of sleep.
Sorry to hear you too suffered w/ insomnia. I actually started this account so I would have something to do at night after I was finished with my school work.

I know not everyone is the same, but you may notice as you get older, functioning without sleep gets more difficult. In my early-mid 20's I could skip a day or 2 of sleep and function just fine, now in my mid 30's, just one day without sleep, and I risk not being able to function.

@llorando Thank you for that. I’m actually beginning to get a bit better. I’ve been undergoing Ketamine IV therapy for weeks now. I only have one session every other week, and usually towards the end of the week, although I have had a couple on a Tuesday. The Nurse practitioner who works at the psychology practice where I’m doing my externship offered it to me to see if it would help me with my PTSD, depression, anxiety and insomnia. It’s REALLY helping! Although they like me to take the rest of the week off, as they don’t want me treating patients for a couple of days after the treatments. It’s really helping. With any luck by the time I’m done with it, they hope I’ll be sleeping a LOT more regularly. My depression is already almost gone, as is my anxiety, and the PTSD is much better. I cannot believe this is not more readily available, or that insurance doesn't pay for it. I’ve all but eliminated my meds in a VERY short period of time! It’s truly been a near miraculous change. I’m so much more at peace, and I feel a calmness that I have not felt since I was a little girl. Thanks for your concern, the effects on my body and mind, from not getting regular sleep as I get older has been a worry of mine for a while. I really hope this changes that, and its not just another thing that only works while I’m actively taking it!
Thank you again.

Wow, that's both interesting and amazing, that an IV treatments can do so much and can eliminate the need for meds. I'm happy the IV treatment is working, insomnia and depression isn't fun, and what I've been told, they can make each other worse. It could really help a lot of people, but sadly long term treatment is more profitable then short term cure.

@llorando It’s not about profit, it’s about treating people suffering from these conditions. If there was strictly a profit motive, why would this practice offer this treatment to patients, knowing full well that they could be cured, or at the very least greatly improved? Ketamine has been around for years, it’s only now that it’s been approved for use with these conditions. Like I said, my sleep is SO much better. I’m sleeping every night now. maybe not 8hrs a night, but I get at least 3 or four hours guaranteed, and more often than not I get a good 6hrs of sleep! The meds I’ve eliminated are my sleeping pills, and my anti-anxiety med (Xanax). You should try to be a little less skeptical of the medical industry. Doctors are doing everything they can to cure patients. It’s the insurance industry that would rather pay $1000/mo ($12,000/yr) to treat something for someone’s entire life than just pay $50,000 once for the cure!

My bad, I was referring to insurance/pharmaceutical companies and not Dr's who I know are there to help people any way they can. Didn't notice the end of my response got erased/deleted (happens sometimes on my phone), which made it seem like I was referring to everyone when I wasn't. Like I originally intended to say, and what you stated, the issues lies with insurance (pharmaceutical) companies choosing cheaper long term treatments over more expensive short term treatmenta. The practice where your externing at offering this treatment, they aren't the one's with a profit motive, but the insurance companies choosing to cover cheaper treatments instead. My response about profit is based on personal experience, my sister has bad knee pain and needs knee surgery to fix it, and her insurance is refusing to cover it, instead opting to only cover pain meds and shots. To be clear, my skepticism isn't with the medical industry as a whole, my skepticism is mostly with insurance/pharmaceutical companies, who prioritize profits. I included pharmaceutical companies, as there is a possibility they could give kick backs to certain insurance companies not to cover certain treatments, as that's what's currently happening with my parents, they switched insurance plans, and the new plan only covers a specific brand of diabetic supplies, so they now haft to pay out of pocket or switch to the insurance covered brand which is inferior (based on all the extensive research I did, their new insurance company gets discounts from the manufacture for only covering their diabetic supplies). And I'm happy your sleeping so much better, every little bit of sleep helps, and can go along way in making you not feel like crap. Fingers crossed you continue to improve, even after your done with treatment :).
Here is what my response is suppose to say.
"It could really help a lot of people, but sadly long term treatment is more profitable then short term cure to insurance and pharmaceutical companies".

@llorando Yes I TOTALLY agree with THAT! My mom is a fckn’ DOCTOR! Like an actual trauma surgeon! Even HER insurance refuses to pay for a knee replacement until she’s had like 5 years of pain meds, injections and jamming a needle in there to drain the fluid! (Obviously she’s getting the surgery, and her friend will do it free, and the hospital, where she is the head of emergency medicine, isn't going to charge her!) But even if they did charge her, I’m blessed to come from an incredibly wealthy family on my father’s side, so there’s literally almost nothing that we could not afford. That’s not my point. My point is that a physician and surgeon who says “I need a knee replacement” gets the “well have you tried 5 years of conservative management?” Mom was like "YES! Obviously, or I would not have said I need a fckn’ knee replacement!”! by the way, she needs it because she played volleyball in high school, and injured her knee! But still, the choice to make someone live on toxic meds which always have side effects, instead of just curing the illness is disgraceful!

@CrazyGirl2 you do very well on a few hours of sleep per night. If I don't have my 8 hours old age pensioner sleep I'm pretty much comatose the next day (such as today). I got a few hours last night, kept waking up because my body hates me sometimes.

That's awesome her fried is going to do the surgery for free. My sister is switching insurance to something with a little better coverage that will cover the surgery. My sister needs knee surgery due to arthritis. Maybe one day, well be in a place where cures are prioritized over drugs that sometimes, can do more harm then good.

I've been sleep-deprived for many years, so, I barely feel anything. One could say that sleep deprivation doesn't hit me as hard as it used to. For most, sleep deprivation means confusion, inability to think, etc. but I've been able to operate just fine. I wouldn't say optimally but I don't have crankiness or anger outbursts. At times I am very alert and restless, always with something to think or ruminate about. I don't drive or operate machinery, anyhow, and I have other reasons for that in addition to this, so, sleep deprivation mostly just affects me and not something I influence others with. I make conscious effort not to do certain things because of this and it has prevented many potential problems.

I swear, sometimes I feel like I could have ADD when I'm well-rested and can't recall some facts I learned. I'm not used to being in that state, so if I get distracted more often than usual then it's probably not because I'm experiencing a deja vu moment or that I just farted or that I had some seizure within 10 seconds entering into a conversation with someone, though, likely, that has happened to me at some point and I wasn't aware of it.
- 1 y
I will also say that, somehow, when my body is fatigued, I get more vivid nightmares—usually when I'm not consciously aware of some bodily pain I have in an arm or leg until I wake up and feel it there. I can lucid dream. I remember my dreams. I also feel my dreams to be another reality in which I experience all my senses because I can read, write, etc.

Now, the even weirder thing is, despite the fact I am pretty much sane when I am deprived of sleep, I can't seem to get over not having a meal in. I can get emotional if I don't eat and that's when all manner of weird crap happens like the bout of cranky and snapping. But that's another story for another day. I've learnt to fast for a long time so that I can go for long without getting to that state of crazy.
1 yMy patience and moods go down from +100 to Nuclear within seconds; my vision becomes blurry and I can see 'stars' flying; I hear things of which I am pretty sure they aren't there; struggle to read texts and nothing I read registers. words, letters, they seem to be merging into each other. I have this particular feeling in my head, which to me is only associated with exhaustion; a bit like a migraine, but then a 'Silent Migraine' (Silent Migraine is a Migraine without the headaches).
There's a high chance I have ME/ CFS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome... and sleep deprivation is a part of that; I am so tired that I can't even sleep.10 Reply

1 yMy sleep pattern is in the following clumps - 1 hour, 4 hours, 2 hours, 1 hour. If I wake up at any of these natural breaks- 1 hour, 5 hours, 7 hours or 8 hours, I'm fine. Otherwise, I will need a nap. I used to work rotating shifts years ago - sleep pattern went to heck after that.

- Greater agitation
- Increased neuroticism & Poor emotional regulation
- Increased feelings of hunger
- Slower & more harsh digestion
- Poor fluid balance
- Greater muscle soreness
- Greater pain in ears (hyperacusis)
- Harder heartbeat
- Poor skin quality

"Increased feelings of hunger"
I've never made that connection... I can have period in which I am so hungry, 24/7, eating doesn't do a thing about that and results in me eating even less.
I have just been made aware that malnutrition can be linked to ME/ CFS. A 27 year old lady just passed away in the UK and her death has been placed on ME/ CFS and malnutrition.
I still do for a substantial amount of money per week food shopping, £45-£70 (or $55 to $90)... but I am wasting away - 1 y
I reckon my increased feelings of hunger are due to how my hormones aren't regulating properly. So for instance, I'd have to really make sure my foods have balanced glycemic loads or the blood sugar spikes may be larger than normal. Here's an example:

For a while I thought I may have Diabetes... but I have had blood tests done and nothing comes out of it other than a slight elevation in Cholesterol levels

u 1 yI never knew true sleep deprivation until having a baby 🥴
First it started with just fatigue, then for a couple weeks I had delusions, hallucinations and was not in my right mind, and now after 3 months of constant sleep deprivation, I feel like I’ve got the flu all the time - my immune system has suffered with the lack of sleep. Constant headaches, fatigue, low mental energy, fever sometimes, etc.10 Reply - 870 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic.
1 yI usually handle it well. But the longest i went was 2 weeks of 2-3 hours of sleep a night. My body shut down the 3rd week. I couldnt talk. I legit had no voice and i couldnt stand. I was so fatigued. Drinking water didn't help. I had to get at least 8 hours of sleep for a week before i could walk and talk again. It was scary feelin paralyzed

1 yI'm already a night owl at heart and then to top it off my prescription adderall doesn't always help when I am feeling ready to sleep but then it counteracts my ability to do so. I get almost drunk like, headaches, sore, unmotivated unless I take another one to boost my levels once more... it's a rough cycle even on days I don't take my medicine.

1 yHey that's tough... You don't say if it's from just one night of 3 hours or a longer period of time. Hopefully, you can get in touch with the cause and alleviate it. Regardless, make sure you are getting enough liquids even if you don't feel like eating. If it's on-going, I'm sure you know you may need to see someone for it. Wishing you the best and hoping you get some good rest soon!!
