Yes, as  sex  is not the same as  gender.  Gender is a class used to describe how masculine and feminine someone is. Sex -- not to mention gender, which is even more complex -- determination is actually rather complicated.

First of all, it isn't actually the Y chromosome that determines expression of male vs. female characteristics. It's a single gene, the sex determining region Y ( ) that controls physical sexual development. This is almost always on the Y chromosome, and almost never on the X chromosome, but that can happen (e. g. and ). Men with XX chromosomes can vary quite a bit, though. There are people with cells derived from different fertilized ova (chimeras, , and mosaics, ).

So sure, the large majority of people are XY-male or XX-female, but there are exceptions. And that doesn't take into account gender dysphoria, which is separate from sex. I don't see why it's a problem if someone who's genetically and chromosomally male but whose brain is wired up with female urges (or vice versa) chooses to live in accord with what's most comfortable, and to voluntarily undergo procedures to change their outward sexuality.

I guess that depends on your definition of gender, but there's only one reproductive system that each human is born with that's designed to function, barring any medical complications. You either produce sperm or you make eggs and can give birth to a fertilized egg. If you define "gender" by whichever you are born with, male or female, then so far there are only two. No human has ever been born with DUAL, fully functional, reproductive systems. If you don't define gender that way, the discussion is wide open.

no. there's male and female. that's it. there is rare freaks of nature or certain animal species who have both sexes (notice it's still 2 cause i said both) we call these Hermaphrodites but they're not a third sex. then also there's species who do Parthenogenesis. some of them have males, some of them don't, meaning some only need one specimen to reproduce by itself. but we still call the ones giving birth females. so yeah. no third gender there either.

we call the sexes and thus the genders after the gametes of which there's only 2. that's it.

People say that if your sex is male but your feminine, then your gender is female.

But that's just a feminine man, not a woman.
