How to handle hitting rock bottom?

The short version of what happened over the past year includes

- Legal issues; a couple of arrests, legal issues in court, restraining order thrown on me, $$ lost to hiring a lawyer for a few cases, some time in jail, forced to wear an ankle monitor.

- Medical issues; diagnosed with multiple mental disorders, admitted to a mental facility, $$ lost due to medical issues, therapy, various medications

- Personal issues; Loss of my image, loss of my respect, feeling endlessly hopeless and helpless, forced to move in with my mother, feeling of complete defeat.

This has been by far the most challenging year of my life.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase a million times by now about how the good thing about rock bottom is that the only direction you can go from there is up.


This is my personal belief but I think part of the reason we encounter shitty situations is to learn from them. There’s always something to be seen, conflict tells us what we need to know about someone else as well as ourselves, failure is necessary for growth, etc. and in the moment it sucks. Like, massively sucks, you’re valid if you feel a bit hopeless in the moment and you just want to languish a while. But the good news is the world doesn’t stop even when it feels like it ends. You can still keep going, make things better than they are now. Just don’t compare what is to what could be, compare what is to what was.

Acknowledge the reality of your current situation without judgment. Avoid self-blame and negative self-talk.

Best way to deal with it is to be accurate about it. Rock bottom is an elusory concept. Truth is that circumstances can always get worse or better & that the true meaning of those concepts will change as we change.
