I just found out my dad had prostate cancer?

I just found out today. My dad waited to tell my sister and I I knew he had surgery, but I didn’t know it was this serious and my emotions right now. He did get surgery and they got everything out but he has to get checkups for the next year to make sure it doesn’t come back. My question is how do I get through this?

It depends on how aggressive his individual cancer is, and what stage the cancer was in. There is a scale called "The Gleason Scale" that is a measure of how aggressive the cancer is. The lower the number, the less aggressive. And regarding the stage, that is a measure of how far it spread. If they say they got it all, it was probably at a low stage. If it eases your mind, ask him what his Gleason scale number is, if he knows. It might be a low aggressive case.

I just found out this morning the scale his was number eight, but since they found it early, he had surgery and stuff so if he had no clue it would’ve gotten worse and wouldn’t have looked good for sure.

Try to see the positive side of the story, the surgery went well and he will be fine. I understand the shock of not knowing what was going on maybe it was for the best. Be there for him and support him and make sure you spoil that Man. He will be fine.

I think you should count your blessings because he had a surgery for it that seems positive with a positive outcome.
You are one of the lucky ones who's dad's cancer was caught in time to do something about it. Most people aren't that lucky.

It is a pretty treatable condition if you find out about it at an early stage. It sounds like his prognosis is good. concentrate on that. Just try to help him in his recovery.
