There shouldn't be. They can use an ultrasound scaler, they can hand-scrape, or a combo of the two. Then, the tech rinses your mouth with a water jet from their handpiece. After that, most will blow-dry the area with an air-jet from their handpiece. Once dry, any leftover tartar will be obviously different from the tooth on which it is stuck. And the process repeats: scale/scrfape, since, blow-dry, reassess for remaining tartar.
