It's because most of people are too damn lazy to even stretch for the TV remote control, and some gyms even got escalators before the entrance!
So there's this hype about pushing yourself over the limits, working hard and the mind's control over the body!
To make those damn lazy a**holes do some work or you'll never see the end of questions how they are fat - thus - ugly - thus insecure - thus annoying - thus trolling
I personally just know how far can I push myself without causing negative consequences, but I just know it, there's no formula, it's a common sense!
Though mild working out is the same as no working out, so of course you gotta make an effort instead of being paranoid about injury.

I see exercise class leaders(like spinning) actually promoting all high level activity. I am not a qualified trainer but do know the value of "long slow work". all high level weights and high level aerobics makes you hungry, tired and sore. And I have run Boston twice and completed and Ironman so I I have some idea. good luck.
How much is too much?
I may have overtrained a bit this past week, I went to the gym 5 times instead of my usual 4 and did more weights, but each workout was a little shorter, like 40-50 minutes instead of over an hour. But I got sore.
So I guess I did overtrain?
I think people worry that they won't lose enough weight or feel guilty for not working out.
Unfortunately, each individual thinks he/she knows his/her body best...I've seen it when doctors or physical therapists talk to hardcore athletes about toning it down some after an injury and so many have trouble listening...I think I'd rather be on the overtraining side than undertraining personally though...
