Less than 1% of people are alergic to peanuts, is it right that 99% of us can't eat them?

I just looked it up and only 0.6 - 1.0% of people have a mild to more severe peanut allergy, and studies show that about 20% of peanut allergies can be outgrown. such a small number of people ruin peanut foods for the rest of us.

I may have made the poll a bit extreme but I'm just making a point, personally I don't think it's fair for the 99%

We should respect the 1% of people who can't eat peanuts even if it means 99% also can't

I don't like that 99% of people can't eat peanuts because of the 1%

I don't care/just want to see the result.

did you know that touching, smelling, or inhaling airborne particles from peanuts does not cause a severe reaction.

Smelling the aroma of peanuts is not the same as inhaling peanut particles that could potentially contain the allergenic protein. The aroma of peanuts comes from different compounds that cannot cause an allergic reaction.

in some schools they ban people from bringing in food that may contain peanuts and allot of restaurants have taken as much peanuts out of their products as they can. so the rest of us with or without realizing it "can't eat peanuts" INDIRECTLY.

For some people physical contact with peanuts can cause a rash or swelling/redness. Which, while not deadly is still unpleasant and annoying. I know, I've seen it happen.

Now as for removing peanuts from food- I've never heard of this. I know that some kitchens, to respect people with DEADLY allergies have separate work areas, peanut free/glutton free and then where they prepare everything else. I've been to plenty of restaurants and not one of them has talked about changing recipes, nor have I noticed any difference.

This says one of two things- 1. You're exaggerating/wrong or 2. They change them in such a way that makes it unnoticeable.

If you're really that upset by respecting the safety of others' lives (It's not a matter of mild to sever it's a matter of mild to deadly, this allergy can very easily, and very quickly kill the person) regardless f their numbers, then go to Thai restaurants, Peanuts are their main ingredient and they're not changing that sh*t for anyone.

Most of the time places just say "If there's an allergy let the server know" so that way they can prepare it specially for that person and keep their food away from contaminated areas. I don't think any one is suffering for those signs.

Not to mention that the number is nearly 10% in America. 30 million people have sever food allergies of various sorts here in America alone. So yes, that is reason enough to warrant special precautions. From the research I've done I've only seen one, maybe two or three articles about restaurants changing their recipes around.

I do like the idea of signs saying let the server know of any allergies. I did say I was exaggerating when I made the poll. what started this is someone posted on Face Book they took out peanut oil in a restaurant and it makes the food taste worse for them.

I'm only talking about peanuts because I was told back in junior high and high school not to bring in peanut foods which doesn't bother me because I only like peanut butter at home. they never said don't bring in shellfish or other foods.

I know a person that actually does have an airborne allergy to peanuts and she had to go to a nut free school so that she would not be exposed to them. It was a very expensive private school. I am not sure where you feel slighted with your peanuts not being available to you. Where I live you can have peanuts pretty much anywhere. I have been on a plane once where someone had a peanut allergy so we could not have peanuts but I as okay with that. If it had been my loved one with the allergy I would want people to respect that we were in an enclosed space that medical attention could be gotten for the person easily. Having a food allergy myself I wish more places would be more accommodating to all types of food allergies.

I don't have any food allergies so I don't know what it's like living with them. if I did I would do my best to be careful by reading food labels and try to impact other people as little as I can. my junior high school banned peanuts (at least for the time I was there) it was a public school too.

Of course I read labels as does anyone with a food allergy but you know it would be nice to be able to eat out every once in a while and know that stuff is available for me to eat. You have obviously never had someone you love have a serious food allergy. If it was your child that was allergic to peanuts you would not be so up in arms about a school saying no peanuts. All I can say is you really must love your peanut butter to be so upset about this.

I do love peanut butter and jam but it's more about the 1% vs 99% because I don't think the minority should have more power than the majority. No I don't know anyone who has a serious food alertly if I did I would have a different outlook about the whole thing.

We can still eat peanuts. Large establishments just want to avoid lawsuits and that's their choice.

In my country, we don't use peanuts in regular food. but, anyway, the 99% non-allergic people shouldn't be forced to don't eat it, as the 1% shouldn't be in risk of death from severe allergy reaction... so, easy way to make happy - put the option of with or without peanut on restaurants and (to the allergic ones) ALWAYS read the content/ ''nutritional tag'' on the things you buy.

here in canada some foods have an icon of a peanut and the "don't smoke" icon on top of it stating that it does not have peanuts in it.

it's much common to use almonds here than peanuts.

Peanuts are good for you. All supermarkets sell them, and they are a good source of protein. I wasn't allowed to bring them to school in elementary or junior high school, but in high school, we were allowed to bring food containing peanuts to school. I thought that it was ironic, but whatever. Whenever, I brought something that contained it, I just would ask around, and so would everyone else. Like you said, its very rare for a severe allergic reaction to occur for a person. So, I am for eating peanuts without having to be too concerned for the minute 1% of people who can't.

It all has do with legal issues, a school doesn't want to get sued, and a restaurant doesn't want a bad reputation.
