So is this just a TV thing or do Americans actually eat the things?

Of course. PBJ sandwiches are tasty and nutritious. You can either use smooth or chunky peanut butter. Chunky contains toothsome bits of peanuts.
On average, two tablespoons of natural peanut butter contain about 7-8 grams of protein. In addition to protein, it also provides healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
You can go crazy with any kind of jam, preserves or jelly - grape, any kind of berry, apricot, fig, plum, mango, jalapeño, ...
I have a jar of fig habañero jam right now that is amazing.
The sweet jelly compliments the salty peanut butter.
Maybe other countries don't have peanut butter because it was invented in America. It was promoted as an inexpensive, nutritional food in the early 20th century.
PB&J sandwiches were/are a popular lunch for children and, as a consequence, they are a comfort food for many adults.
I like mine on warm toast. The peanut butter gets melty.
I don't eat PB&J sandwiches often. But they make an easy, satisfying snack when you don't feel like going to a lot of trouble.
Well said

It’s been a long time since I had a regular peanut butter & jelly sandwich & I mostly had them as a kid & they were easy sandwiches to make. On the flip side I recently had deep fried peanut butter & jelly as well as deep fried cheese cake at a food truck event & it was yummy.
Peanut butter and jelly is a childhood snack and adults enjoy it too.
Peanut butter is an excellent source of protein. The jelly or jam is a little sugar on top. It is a quick, cheap meal when you haven't got anything else to eat. Most folks keep some around.
Peanut butter is used to make cookies. It is not used in any cake of any kind.
The fact is peanuts are a major crop in America and peanut butter is inexpensive to make and buy
It was developed in the 20th century and is a shelf staple. It lasts forever without refrigeration. However, it's not cheap if shipped overseas, it appears, so Europeans and others do not eat it.
When I was in Paris, I packed a jar of it and we ate it on baguettes with apricot preserves. Perfect breakfast for the intreped tourist.
They are pretty good, but not as popular as they once were especially with the invention of a peanut allergy! My father still shakes his head when peanut allergy comes up commenting that when he was growing up no such thing and everyone ate pbj sandwiches.
Americans genuinely love their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This combination is a staple in American household kitchens. The sweet and salty blend is considered comforting and nostalgic for many. I recall tasting this iconic combination for the first time during a road trip in the States; its simplicity was charming. As unexpected as it sounds, that mix of flavors grows on you. Though it may not align with traditional dessert pairings, it has its own charm in the world of snacks. 🍞🥜🍇

It tastes very specific, it's like mixing nutella with garlic. Nevertheless rye-spelt bread with butter and black currant or gooseberry marmalade beats it.
Not so much as they used to. Personally it was never really a thing but lots of kids had 'em at lunch in school. Apparently the three ingredients were included in soldiers' rations during war time, and once sliced bread was introduced, made the task of coming up with a lunch for the kiddos very simple. There are regional variants across the south based on readily available foods such as peanut butter and banana (often grilled or fried), peanut butter and mayo, and the deeep south salted tomato and mayo
lYes we Americans Love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I just had one the other day, but you have to have milk with it to make it even more awesome. It really goes together

Thanks for the idea
Yes it's an actual thing we eat it's not just something you see in our movies and shows.
Most if not all of us grew up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And yeah I get where you are coming from the combination sounds odd and like it wouldn't taste good but it actually works quite well together.
I've seen a lot of videos of foreigners on youtube have the same thoughts as you and most of the time they ended up liking it once they tried it.
Grilled cheese sandwiches made in a frying pan and casseroles are also popular American foods you see in shows and movies that we eat in real life to.
We even have some classical British foods that are a staple for us to like bread pudding.
It is a common food... nearly every American child gets one in her lunch box at least once a week. The combination of flavors is great (especially with preserves rather than jelly) and nutritionally you get carbs in the bread, sugars in the jelly, including simple sugars in the fruit itself, and protein in the peanut butter. Also, unlike meat (for protein) it doesn't need to be refrigerated to be edible several hours after it is made, just make sure it is stored jelly up so the bread doesn't get soggy.
@purplepoppy I think I have tried the combination once or twice, but I have to say the combination is really too sickeningly rich, what with the sugar in both items. I do think that some maybe eat it on a regular base as in Kids lunches etc, but honestly hope not much anymore.
That said... think about Reese cups... peanut butter and chocolate? UGGG.
Peanut butter and chocolate is nice. You'd like it if you tried it.
It isn't really jelly. I mean it is jam, but they call jam "jelly" over there for some stupid reason, and refer to actual jelly as "jell-o"... But you knew that already.
As to whether they eat it... well... the degenerates eat fried chicken and their pancakes aren't flat (plus they use premade pancake mix). Why wouldn't they eat something as incomprehensible as peanut butter and jam? Yanks make no damned sense.
Jello
PBJ's are a staple of American kids. And adults. Not just a TV thing. Carb overload with some peanut salt, protein, and oil thrown in. Instant boost before a run or workout. Takes 2 min to throw together. For more salt and some crunch, throw in a layer of potato chips (crisps).
I used to eat them regularly at public events but now it is considered rude to serve peanut butter at public events because a growing number of people are allergic to nuts. They taste good but I would avoid it for health reasons, I view the jam as too sweet and artificially flavoured, and I view the peanut butter as too processed. I also view the calorie content of both items to be too weak to satisfy my hunger.
they do, it's a staple food. kids love it... unless they have peanut allergy, and it's way better than chicken nuggets... which kids love.
for a quick lunch, p and j works. oddly, the name excludes breads, which is essential to the sandwish.
I would estimate half of the lunch bags at my elementary school had a Peanut Better and Jelly (PB&J) sandwich.
Peanut butter was a forced product born out of necessity to make money in the US South if you don’t know.
Even some restaurants offer it such as the attached, see bottom right of menu.
I thought the whole world ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. If you haven't, you're a crazy weirdo. Peanut butter and blackberry is my favorite. Don't use sweet peanut butter. If you're really feeling squirrely, butter both sides of the sandwich and cook it like a grilled cheese sandwich in a frying pan.
Yes, PB&J sandwiches are really a thing here. They were more kid food growing up because they're easy to make. I rarely eat them, but my husband loves them.
Sure. They used to call PBJ sandwiches 'Chokie's, back in the day;)
Yes, Americans really do eat peanut butter and jelly (PB&J) sandwiches — it's a classic and iconic part of American food culture.
Popular combinations:
Bread (usually white or whole wheat)
Peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)
Jelly or jam (grape and strawberry are the most popular)
Been around my whole life since my family lived here. Schools serve as lunch to kids. Especially for those who are vegetarian kids.
not my favorite. I prefer real peanuts.
I loved them as a kid.. I haven’t had one in over a decade. What’s funny is because I was thinking about having one soon before I came across your question! I’m gonna add bananas too lol
Yes. It's as common as "beans on toast" is in the UK. It's mostly a sandwich kids eat, but probably 10% of the PB&J sandwiches consumed annually are eaten by adults.
Yes, that is something that Americans eat because it is an extremely quick thing to make, and most people enjoy the taste.
peanut butter was marketed as a high protein food in reality it is a high FAT food. it has the same macros as a potato chip. sure it has some more protein but that is barely even usable unless you eat other complementary sources of plant protein and who the hell does that
yeah its really common especially for kids
kinda wanna eat one rn bc its been forever lol you should try it
I just got done eating one 😂 I really like them but mostly as a treat. Some people have ice cream or cake, I have a PB & J sandwich.
I dont. I have never liked fruit preservatives. I do eat peanut butter on toast though. I eat peanuts, almonds, and pistachios daily. I eat a lot of fruit but not combined with massive sugar and thickening substance.
Yes, and it is disgusting.
You are not missing much.
Yes. It's weird. But then I eat banana sandwiches with peanut butter
England here. Grandma used to make us grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches for breakfast on Saturdays. The savoury tastes of peanut butter and the tropical sweetness of banana created a deliciously salty and sweet combination that, in my opinion, is superior to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
They do, they have an obsession with peanut butter but I can’t help but find it stinks.
Yes, we really do eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches 🥪
yes they do. though it's more for kids than adults
Yes. They're tasty and they're quick and easy to make.
It's a great combination! I'm not being sarcastic: it's actually really good.
I'll pretend I never saw this 🫣
FAREWELL.
It's common enough, but it's a food I've always hated.
They do eat it and it's good. I had one once as a kid I think :)
Yes.
Mainly little kids. I was never a big fan of those.
I think jam nit jelly but shudder at the though of peanut butter and jam in bread.
I wonder why ketchup isn't involed 😁 in your culinary description.
Yes Americans eat peanut butter and JAM sandwiches. Americans call Jam "jelly."
I’ve had them many times in my life, especially when I was a kid and still have it once in a while
I like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Try this one though peanut butter and banana with strawberry jam. Now that is some great
We call it a peanut butter & jam sandwich here in Canada. And yes I had one just yesterday.
PB&J is da 💣!!! Awesome comfort food. Simple but deep.
I'm a broke college guy and eat them all the time.
Yes, I believe so, you can see it in many tv shows and movies.
Yes and in Britain it's a peanut butter and jam sandwich, just as popular.
Yeah they are my childhood, I just had one for lunch today in fact
Yes we eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I like them but I haven't had one in a while
Yes we do. Grape jelly is the most popular but I like apple jelly on mine
I foten wondered this myself, have you bought the kneepads yet?
Peanut butter does not exist.
Absolutely, super common especially growing up
Tasty and easy to make.
I've only eaten them as a child.
We do! It’s not bad.
I have it for lunch at least once a week.
Yea they are awesome
Yep. It's a fav of mine
Yes, it is a childhood favorite.
I'm not sure about Americans, but Canadians do!
I prefer peanut butter & honey sandwiches.
i like just peanut butter
