I would say if anything possibly work less hard. Although it entirely depends on the situation and people of course. Some would probably work just as hard if not harder, but higher paying jobs seem to attract a lot of useless people. Go and have a look at some union workers. There's some stuff being done on the roads around where I live, and every time you drive past the work crews you can usually count about 4-5 people that are doing absolutely nothing. Not lunchtime or anything either because other people are working. There's just a handful that are either very slowly working, or just leaning against a truck, having a smoke, having a coffee, whathaveyou. I mean it's just bullsh*t.

I think it would just cover the inflation of the last few years.

Also, top management earns too much, usually. That's why they absolutely don't feel concerned about the entry levels of the company.

So I would say, increase the entry level's salaries by 20%, reduce the top management's salaries by 50% (and by about 80% for the board), and it will start to be more fair.

It's not individual wages that make people more involved, it's the knowledge they aren't being f***ed and lead by much-too-paid idiots.

Inflation is like 1% every year and at least government payrolls factor it in anyways. Under your plan sounds like the good management would jump ship instantly. Then you have a whole company run by idiots.

@Frunkiss : technically, management is the part of the company that makes the least added value. More than often, it's the part that makes the company fall down. Yet they are paid a lot. This isn't logical. Regarding inflation, it depends on where you live, but since 2008 I fail to see where it has been only 1% a year.

I don't know for sure, but I think raising wages for employees COULD inspire a better work ethic, because employees will feel that their work is being more appreciated and more rewarded. They will also probably feel more incentive to try to keep the job and and make sure the company sees them as useful, because the wages will compare more favorably to more of their other job options.

I think it could keep the hard working ones from leaving and getting a higher paying job but for the lazy ones it won't change anything.

If nothing else changes, at best, you might motivate your employees a little bit. High compensation needs to be followed up with means of trimming out the dead wood. Gradually, your company will then attract the workers with better work ethics who will be more productive.

Wage increases without productivity increases is not good management.

I don't think it would change how hard they work if everyone gets the same raise. The best thing to do is offer pay raises to the hardest working employees. That will encourage the others to work harder so they can get pay raises too.

It wouldn't change anything. Merit-based pay increases are the way to go for better work.

You would get more loyalty. Your good workers wouldn't leave for better offers. However, %20 doesn't seem worth it.
