Beggar's Night is the night before Halloween.

The city of Des Moines Iowa banned trick-or-treating on Halloween in 1938, to crack down on vandalism, and ever since, the youth of Des Moines have gone door to door in their costumes on the night before Halloween, known as Beggars’ Night.

In 2024, with bad weather forecast for the day before Halloween, Des Moines broke with tradition and allow kids to trick-or-treat on Halloween.

I've been looking into (notso) old customs before America spolit things and feeding the poor was once a common feature either by handing out bread and cheese or buckets of broth, charity was considered a good way of pleasing the ancestors.

There are those today that think we should go back to that rather than the childrens festival we see today, I don't think the ancestors would be pleased with trick or treating.
