I don’t think I’ve ever had a really good time on New Year’s Eve as an adult, other than a boring night at home. I usually just worked if I could, but the few times I went to a party…I was in a college town during winter break, and I’m used to just arriving at midnight, so the whole timeline of the night always just felt “off.” Like I rolled in a few minutes ago, and the climax of evening just happened, haha. I think I was single those years too, and the only time I ever had any real loneliness would be at midnight and everyone would kiss someone. I didn’t have anyone, and this particular circle of friends was not the place to go looking for women, respectfully, haha, so it wasn’t “sad” or anything like that, but maybe more just “hollow.”

I think my most memorable ones are from childhood. We’d have a ritual of getting Chinese food and I’d watch the Three Stooges marathon on Boston’s Channel 38. I’d stay up late and watch the ball drop, and then that was that. Simple, but nice.

I guess I remember 1989 specifically because I got invited to sleep over at my friend’s house. I always remember the NFL Wildcard Round was on that NYE, as I got to my friend’s house and I remember watching a shot of the Houston Oilers walking down the tunnel after just losing to (I think) Pittsburgh. I was in the early stages of my football fanaticism, so I was all about NFL games on TV, I never missed them. I remember having to leave to go to my friend’s and I was mad I couldn’t watch the finish, haha.

I remember yelling out “Goodbye, 1980s!” as the final seconds were ticking down for the ball drop. That was interesting to me. I was just shy of 11, and this was the first time I was conscious for a decade change.

Then I remember the next morning my friend’s dad made us Egg McMuffins, because he had the little circular things to crack the egg into to give it its shape. I was pretty blown away by that, homemade McDonald’s, haha. I think his dad used to be a manager at one. So I left there thinking my friend’s dad lived at the coolest house ever, lmao
