Anonymous(36-45)10 moHUGE motivation for me at being able to do, DIY, is if I see the price of what it would take someone else to do it. My only exceptions to this are dangerous things like electrical work, or roofing, or something that by myself, would be so incredibly time consuming that it wouldn't be worth it.
One summer in college, I was employed by my aunt to get a whole bunch of DIY projects done in a house she'd just moved into. My aunt is a true old school feminist who believes women are extremely capable of doing what they put their minds to, and she wasn't wrong. I installed blinds and curtains, built shelves and entertainment systems, refinished her flooring, steam cleaned her kitchen/bath, redid her front porch, fixed her bike, restored her tiling, and a bunch of other smaller tasks.
It really taught me a lot about not being a helpless little girl, and having to rely on a man to do it for me. On my own home, I've re-painted my entire house, fixed two toilets, painted a few interior rooms, fixed a freezer, added new tiling, done some car repair, power washed all the concrete, used a chainsaw to cut up some trees up after a storm...you name it. I think my aunt was right in that we're just taught to be so weak sometimes, like we can't do basic things, but then how do men do it? They google that s**t too!!!!10 Reply

I'm certainly not the best... However, I can at least tell the difference between a hammer, screwdriver and a drill! lol

10 moI am reasonably good. My maternal grandfather was a real MacGyver. Created 7-8 items that he could have easily patented but never did. He would solder brass and built the 2 large standing candelabras and the alter cross for his church. He would repair his appliances (of course that's when it was possible to do so rather than have to toss it as we have now.) Also highly proficient in electrical and plumbing. My dad did some good functional woodworking, was an avid gardener, and did more creative things. I'm a blend of them both. But when it comes down to the "big stuff" this older body has to hire some help. Once we or our neighbors find a good craftsman in any area- painting, cabinets, paving, generator installation, plumbing, power washing, whatever- that name gets around. But the everyday stuff is my domain. Now, you will have to excuse me, I have 2 cubic yards of soil that need sifting to backfill my yard.

I can build anything expect a future
And fix anything except a broken heart
Just kidding… trying to sound melancholic
But I once fixed a pc keyboard by finding a broken micro wire in the motherboard
I was 12
I only got better since 😎13 Reply- 10 mo
Lol!!! Now why would you want to sound melancholic? Have you got the post holiday blues?
However your improvements since the age of 12 sounds very promising to me!!😉 - 10 mo
Lol!! It's so good to see I made you chuckle not just once but twice!!
And I am looking forward to see you surprise me with your expertise in what you can build!!😉

I enjoy the creative side of DIY, like painting or redecorating a space. I also love making unique art pieces or customizing my surroundings. However, I'm not particularly skilled at tasks like repairing doors or unblocking pipes. For those, I usually call in a professional. 🎨🛠️

10 moI'm a fearless DIY guy. In part because I like to get stuff done quickly and done right. In the USA finding a contractor or trades person and making sure they show up, clean up, and do the job properly is often more effort than just doing it yourself. The downside is that I end up with all sorts of knowledge I never wanted in my brain and a collection of specialty tools I'll likely never use again.

10 moI do pretty much everything myself. I prefer it. There's much more satisfaction in doing things yourself and it saves you a buck. YouTube gives enough information to figure things out for the part. The only thing I don't fuck with is health. I'm no medical expert, although I try to stay natural for the most part. But if I don't know what ailment I have, I'd rather trust a professional.

10 moOh boy... not at all...
Somewhat in my defense though, I do have several mental illnesses as well as learning disabilities. Things that would take a "normal" healthy person probably like 5 seconds could take me up to 5 hours or more, or being completely unable to do it at all... heh.

10 moAssuming this is a free for all question: I have a toolbox that I barely use. For context, I’m a single woman living in an apartment with roommates. We have maintenance for that. Granted, I try to see if I can fix the problem first without having to contact them. If it’s putting something together that comes with an instruction manual then easy peasy.
10 ReplyI'm alright. I fixed my clothes and today I'm gonna fix my headset. I had to go buy some glue. But I couldn't do plumbing. In Switzerland you don't really have to do that though unless you buy a house and even then I think most people will pay someone to do it. I also tore down a deck that was rotting and built a new one once. And it's still in good condition 10 years later :)
10 ReplyI do a lot of things around the house myself. I can do electrical work and some plumbing. I do some wood butchery that might pass for carpentry. I maintain all my power equipment and two vehicles. I taught myself most of it over the last 20 years.

10 moI’m very good, learned every trade when I was in my teens and twenties and it’s definitely good to know when you own a home since things happen all the time and it’s very costly to pay someone and never know if they will show up or do a good job
10 ReplySome stuff yes, electral i can handle but making stuff from scratch is a shoogly peg for me. I just finished painting my house the other day and that was an epic win but took way longer than if contractors were used.

10 moAs a career engineer, I'm pretty good at most around-the-house jobs. I stay away from complex plumbing though and leave that to the experts.

10 ReplyI'd like to think I'm fairy good at it since I do a lot of handy type work at my job with things like repair and maintenance.
10 ReplyPretty good but not the best of the best. Some people are fucking wizards and can do everything great. I can fix most stuff on a car or a house, though
10 ReplySimple stuff, I'm OK at. But anything that requires a finishing touch, such as cosmetic woodworking, or has tight tolerances or is in a confined space, I leave alone.
10 ReplyI stick gaffer tape on things that are broken to make them at least imitate being unbroken. Sometimes it takes a lot of gaffer tape.
10 ReplyPretty good at it. It's not going to fix itself. So I just get in there and fix it. My friends know this too, so I'm always helping them too.
I'm sure it comes from my father.
10 ReplyPretty god on mechanical stuff, I'm not great at fine woodworking.
