Anyone feel like your hobbies are dwindling?

If someone asked me at this point, “what are your hobbies?” I think I almost wouldn’t know what to tell them anymore. It’s a very odd thing, for me my hobbies were very prominent and important during the couple years of the pandemic but after coming out of it, it’s been like this full on commitment to work, making money, seeking better job opportunities. Inflation kicked our butts.

But in all of this, I feel like I’ve lost a ton of passion for the things I loved. It sucks. Maybe I’m just getting older too.

I've found that a lot of it is finding hobbies that fit into your life.

Like I recently got into selling walking sticks on Etsy. When I go on a hike I'll keep an eye out for sturdy ones with an interesting shape, sand, finish, sell. My first walking stick made me $60 which I immediately put into another hobby of racing hokarts on the weekend lol.

I think what makes hobbies healthy is you're always trying to get better at something that makes you feel good. Sometimes you have to sort of detox your dopamine and start slow again.

Not at all. I have several hobbies, and they are doing fine. Over my life, I've had a few hobbies that have lasted for years while others come and go.

In the winter, oh yes. All my hobbies involve being outside in the summer when it's warm. Tho, this year, I have added the fun and excitement of social media to my hobby list for winter!

I always was a camera buff. Eventually I got my BS in Communications and Visual Design, including a minor in Photography. Even made some money shooting weddings, on-location studio shots for publications. Picked up an MBA in there, somewhere, too. Always liked growing things in the garden. Now, we need a summer garden just to help keep total cost of food down a bit. Always liked music. Had piano (8-12 yo), guitar (17), organ (18-20). At the end of my organ training, I was making my own arrangements and transposing them, both "on paper" and "on the fly". Always liked massages. 35 years ago I took a one-day massage workshop and became a licensed MT. Still have that license and still practice, except I just can't do 6 hour-long sessions in a row like I used to. Always did like to cook, and just got through helping at our Thanksgiving Day church breakfast by grinding out some pancakes. Always liked books, and now co-manage our church library of about 8,000 titles. Always liked MacGyvering solutions to problems.

Long story short, the darnedest things somehow got intertwined with everything else, so I have a vast collection of talents, training, experience and "hobbies" that I can draw upon to help people, solve problems, and continue my everyday life.

If you’ve lost your hobbies, you lost your curiosity first. I’d worry about that.

Are you sliding into that place where a lot of people go in their 30’s? That nice comfortable place where you decide to give up on yourself. Accept letting your mind and body go to hell. As you wait for death. However long that takes.

It’s okay to not focus on hobbies as much when you have a lot going on. Your passion for the things you love will come back. I do feel like I’ve grown disinterested in a lot of things as I’ve grown older but the things I’m passionate about I put time towards

That really sucks. I’m sorry you’re feeling that way. I hope you find things you genuinely enjoy again and can make time for them. For me, the problem is I don’t have time for the things I love anymore. I haven’t painted, sketched, travelled, gardened, or done a bunch of other things in ages.

I really do not have hobbies. When I was younger I was interested in a lot of different things. Cars, boats , fishing , scuba diving, component stereo, and computers. Now I just cannot work up any enthusiasm for anything. I always wanted to buy an old jeep and do an engine swap and a total makeover and have a really cool beach buggy. Now I just do not see the point.

Nah, not at all, but I have had the same hobbies for most of my life. Nothing has changed except when I am working; it does eat up most of my time.

Nope, but I inherited a property-tax limited house so I do not have the rent/mortgage expense most have.

It's critical to have hobbies and sometimes you do have to "force" it. but the payoff is there. It's also ok to evolve your hobbies and likes.
