Effably has great advice on how you can approach this situation, I’d also add to that by saying to act within your comfort levels. If you feel confident and comfortable enough to approach first then go for it, I think it’s a power move and shows things don’t have to be awkward between you two, it will also show outwardly that you aren’t bothered even if you are on the inside.
However, I understand some people just aren’t comfortable to do this, so if that is you then I’d say just keep your distance, focus on your other friends or family and try not to make his presence the focal point of your night. I think you can still present as unbothered that way as well.

I'd take initiative. When you see them, walk up. A simple "Hey, nice to see you.", little handshake or friendly hug, polite not intimate. And then cut with a simple layout of expectations. E. g "Hope you have a good time". Which doubles as polite but also effectively goodbye. Or whatever you are happy with.

By setting expectations most people naturally fit into them. So by taking command of the situation you can, most of the time, dictate how (or at least in what way) it plays out.
