It is inappropriate to gift money for Christmas?

In my opinion it depends.

Generally I think it's appropriate gift of small sums (50-100€) to teenagers and students, so they can buy themselves what they prefer - that's what I did with my brother and my wife's cousin.

Someone here wrote a really good answer, that it's a good gift for young people.
I'm "just" 26, but I admit I have no idea what things teenagers like my brother or wife's cousins are into, so monetary gifts are the best choice so I know they will be getting something they like or that they need.

MONEY IS ALWAYS an appropriate gift. This is especially true when the gifter is a relative at a distance in age or actual distance, or can't get you what they'd like to, or shop WITH you.

One of the best Christmas gifts I got this year was a beautiful Christmas-looking tin of tons of coins! I know why my friend gave me them. I'd told him I had wonderful memories of my daddy emptying his pockets once a week of a pound of change and telling me to take what I needed when I was a little girl!

It was his way of treating me and it felt like love, which of course, it was. That spare change could make a 7 or 8-year-old happy!

I cried when I opened the gift: thought it was Fiddle Faddle or mixed nuts! Turned out it was $26 in coins that he and his partner threw in two $20 bills!

I bought flowers for my family gathering, treated myself to a massage, washed my car, picked up veggies for gumbo and bananas for me and to make banana bread for others, which will include them today!

So touching that he remembered what I'd said and practical! That people remember to GIVE something that you can use exactly as you need is PERFECT!

We simply don't do it. Giving gifts is more about showing how we treasure people in our lives than about the gifts themselves.

in our household and tradition... it is something we do as an extra, on Christmas, but it is not the main gift, since we do spend two and sometimes three days together... all the kids and teens do get some extra cash to spend during these days

now, in more modern days... with online shopping and deliveries to your place, we've also starting to do this in our family, gift cards and "online cash" are a more popular option year by year

It is an honest gift. Rather than buying something the recipient does not want and having him or her pretending to like it, returning it to get what is really wanted, and then hoping the giver never asks about it, gifting money cuts out the nonsense.

It’s a very good idea especially when they are teens. It’s also interesting to know what they would do with the money.

it has been a tradition in our family to give kids a very small present along with money.

I used to teach my kids around 6-7 years. old to add up their Christmas/bday money.
now they they are teens, they are surprised that they have almost $10k.

we just showed them how to invest in CDs with 5%.

kids in America have too much junk toys… I remember visiting some friends. Their basement is full of plastic toys and kids only play with them for 5 m. then they go off to their video games. They don’t appreciate stuff.

No, it’s the most honest and less insipid when gifting to those who need it. I usually travel around with a wad of $20s and hand it out to those I see deserving of it.
