What type of dog would men surprise women that they care about with?

I would never recommend getting someone a large pet as a surprise gift. They are a huge responsibility and drastically alter a person's living situation. The only way I'd ever get someone a gift as a pet is if it was thoroughly discussed beforehand and at that point, a breed would have probably been discussed. That being said, I've always been partial to big dogs that serve as both companion and protector. I had a Dutch Shepherd and it was the best dog I've ever had so I guess I'd recommend that. If they're easily intimidated and don't have a dominant personality and just want a loving companion I'd probably recommend an English or French Bulldog.
