In Year 1383 Jadwiga (or Hedwig) was the first female monarch of the Kingdom of Poland, reigning from 16 October 1384 until her death. Sent away from her mother from Hungary she went to Poland when she was 11 years old and inherited a kingdom of Poland from her late father. This kingdom was in the process of a civil war. Her coronation was in Krakow in autumn 1384. Since childhood She fell in love with the Duke of Austria William the Courteous (of Habsburg), whom she intended to marry.
When William arrived outside the castle gates of Krakow he was surrounded by Jadwiga's own guards. Jadwiga threw herself at the gate but was pulled away by her guards. William was dragged away and sent into exile.
after that the archbishop announced to Jadwiga, that her marriage to William was annulled and that they have found "a more suitable king for Poland" claiming, that William (who was 14 years old and was thought of being inexperienced) and his Austrian kinsmen could not safeguard Poland from its powerful adversaries like Luxemburg. The replacement they found for her to marry was Jogaila, pagan duke of Lithuania, converting into Catholism. And so the nobles from Krakow have assembled and voted for the acceptance of Jogaila's marriage proposal. August 1385 Jogaila signed the Union of Krewo. If Jadwiga married Jogaila, William would receive 200000 florins in compensation, which William never accepted. 18 February 1386 the 35 year old Jogaila has married the 12 year old Jadwiga. almost Never to meet her beloved William again as she got occupied in collaboration with Jogaila to tend to the duties of being Poland's Queen, fighting off the adversaries, ending civil wars and bringing peace and stability to her kingdom all while William is exiled.
