Is 6 years of engagement too long (couple in their 30s)?

Asking for a relative who's much older. They got married in their 40s after 6 years of engagement, there was nothing really stopping them. They also got divorced almost 4 years later..

If there is an obvious reason to postpone a marriage, it's okay. If he is in the Navy, going to be deployed the next 18 months, then returning home and leaving the Navy, then postponing a wedding makes sense. And up to a one year delay is okay.

But a couple that is engaged for 3-4 years with no obvious justification to postpone it that long. . . seems like at least one of them is very reluctant, and there's probably a good reason to be reluctant.

My uncle did not want to marry my aunt because she had anger issues but her dad pressured him to marry her because she was rich and beautiful and wore nice clothes and they divorced less than 6 years into the marriage when she cheated on him with a con artist who lied to her and told her he was rich. The police arrested him shortly after their second or third date but my uncle would not take her back after the divorce.

Yes that doesn't seem like an engagement anymore. An engagement is similar to a very brief summary of how the relationship has been and the overview of what marriage will be like. It's similar to the last finishing before your book gets published.

A 6 year-old engagement goes back to just being a relationship, the initial dating stage.

I don't believe engagement and marriage matters. Not in the slightest. If anything, I imagine it probably does more harm than good.

I'm not saying you shouldn't get married ofc, but I'd think about what it is that you're expecting from it that's different from just being together without a marriage ceremony.

Perhaps the Engagement was Ideal for One or Both of Them and when Married-------It be came More of a Legal Beagle Deal that was Not suiting One or Both of them. It happens. xxoo
