Traditional marriage yes but also more. The children was the culmination of the love between a man and woman. It was also about 2 people choosing to share everything in sickness and in health richer or poorer until death do they part. Marriage in its purest form is a beautiful and strong thing that is responsible for bringing humans to the point we are at. Nope. Marriage is for expressing and symbolizing the love between two people. If children come between that at some point then great, but it at least shouldn't be the reason (or the main reason).

Kids are a part of a married situation and that's fine, as mentioned, but you don't get married cause you want kids, but because you love someone.

At one point marriage was about having children and establishing bonds between families. Fortunately this isn't the Middle Ages anymore and we're not inbred nobles trying to keep the bloodline pure, so as modern people we can marry for love and a certain degree of commitment to each other that isn't equaled by any informal agreement.
