It seems kinda silly. I mean, the only reason diamonds cost so much is because De Beers made a marketing decision to restrict the supply, and the real competitors they have joined in. There are FAR prettier stones out there, and if it's just clear glitteriness you want, cubic zirconias are way cheaper.

I mean, have you SEEN black opal? Tanzanite? Ale- okay, alexandrite might be a bit iffy; I know that if *I* had a stone that appeared to change color depending on light level, I'd probably spend a quarter of my day stepping in and out of a doorway to watch it, but I don't think that's true of most people.
