People who have been married: should a married woman wear both her engagement ring and wedding band after the wedding?

Question

I had dinner with a colleague tonight and I mentioned buying wedding bands this coming week, as we are getting married on April 27. He made the statement that women no longer wear wedding bands and they choose to simply wear their engagement ring. My reaction was to tell him that this is the stupidest thing I have heard so far this year. To the best of my knowledge, women wear both their engagement ring AND their wedding band after they get married.

Obviously, there is no "law" on this subject and a woman is free to do what she wants so please don't tell me that she can do whatever she wants; I already know that. I am trying to determine what other married women do most commonly. Guys, if you have been married, please tell me what your wife does/did.

Traditionally in the U. S., from what I understand, both are supposed to be worn, the engagement ring closer to the base of the finger, unless of course you have an interlocking wedding band that goes over it to complete the ring.

our rule when I was married, was that she just had to wear the wedding band, as did I, of course.

We had matching rings which signified our bond, of which, meant nothing to her apparently.

There is no law, so you can do what you want, but traditionally, not wearing any ring is disrespectful to your marriage and partner as that advertises availability that shouldn't be there.

a lot depends on what they do for a living.
Some places do not allow you to wear rings/jewelry, others an engagement ring can be a pain to deal with on a daily basis.
health care workers that have to put gloves on and off get tired of fighting with it, or they don't want to bang them up on the job.

Really depends most bands fit together mine would not be comfortable without the other!

But my sister does not even wear hers just has it around her neck. Her husband does the same.

Really just the engagement ring seems silly a easy way to say I'm engaged not married if there is someone she likes!

I’ve heard of men not wearing a wedding band before - draw your own conclusions on that one - but as far as I’m aware women always wear the wedding band.

Engagement rings are optional, and definitely the prettier of the pair, but the wedding band is the sign of your status and commitment.

That being said I had to take mine off during pregnancy and it just never fit my finger afterwards. I did gain a bit of weight during pregnancy, but even after I’d lost that weight my ring wouldn’t fit properly.

Honestly I've only been to weddings 5 times in my life and didn't ever really know the workings of a wedding. No one has really educated me on it and I never cared enough to do any research on it. I always thought it was just the engagement ring. A guy buys a girl an engagement ring and then gives her that same ring for the wedding. Boy am I embarrassed to be so far off 😂 My ex actually told me I have to get an engagement ring and we both get wedding bands about 5 months ago. But yeah... I think weddings is usually somewhat of an avoided topic for kids nowadays. Parents just kinda let kids figure things out on their own, which is why you get guys like me. But yeah... my ex said she preferred to only wear the engagement ring. Which I don't mind at all because that would be the ring I put more thought into.

I honestly can't remember for my first marriage, and in the beginning of our marriage me and my wife wore our engagement rings, as that was the only one there was. We both work in labs though, and just leave them at home rather than have to take them off constantly, tarnish them, or get acid burn from the ring breaking a glove, or chemicals getting under it.

I disagree with one of the users comment that "not wearing any ring is disrespectful to your marriage and partner", that is because me and my wife just like many other couples we know these days don't wear any ring on daily basis. Yet we are all madly in love. When we do go for special occasion we put the rings on, she both her engagement and wedding ring, and me just the wedding ring.

In todays society more and more are choosing not to or wear rings, or uses other types of jewelry or even gets tattoo's.

I don't know what is traditional in the U. S. or other parts of the world as we live in Sweden.

I never bought my wife an engagement ring. We were saving to buy a house and it seemed like a good move. Later she stopped wearing her wedding ring. She has arthritis in her hands and they get swollen some times.

Later I bought her a diamond ring. It is gold with a bunch of inlaid diamonds. She has been wearing that.

The only thing we should care about is that she has a ring -- even a $10 ring she found at walmart on that wedding ring finger at ALL TIMES. Just a little safety tip. You don't want your wife to be a victim to these criminals that would take any ring off a woman in a heartbeat. In other words, you don't want to overdue it with a lot of sparkling diamonds 👀

My mom wore both and my wife wears both, even doing messy things like washing things around the house and gardening.

Typically, I don't wear (my good band) during the days at home because of the mechanical and messy things I do. But I do wear my band outside the home with her. Actually it's not my original good band which has been resized a few times and still won't fit right, but just a simple SS replacement that at least fits well.

I have never been married, but think they should wear both. After all, what is the point of buying both if they only wear one? I understand the feeling that they may loose one more easily if they wear both, but I still think of the first point more than the second. He spends quite a tidy sum in most case for it to not be worn. That feels to me as an insult in some manner.

I’m not married yet but when the time comes I know I will wear both rings (but on different hands). Plus the e-ring probably cost some money so I’m gonna wear the shit out of it!

I love wearing rings when I go out so the more the better. But when I’m just out running errands or going to the gym I’ll probably only wear the wedding band out of practicality.

First marriage we only had wedding bands. Current marriage she wears both every day as it should be. Her engagement ring is sculpted on both sides and the band is shaped to fit around it. For an anniversary we got a second band for the other side and the set was put together permanently by a jeweller so the ring set is one ring and does not come appart..

For every day use I usually just wear my wedding band. If I want to look a little nicer I wear both. There's nothing sticking out of my wedding band so it's less likely to catch on or scratch stuff.

My wife works at a Chinese restaurant and ever since Covid hit she has to constantly wash her hands and replace her gloves. The engagement ring diamond kept getting caught on her glove so now she wears her wedding band 🙂
