Should there be like rules when two single people who never been in a relationship before agree to be together forever?

Ok me and my girlfriend who wants to marry me in the near future was just talking religiously about the commandment do not commit adultry.
But we did not know what adultry was until earlier today then we just agreed to that term even though we’re not really married yet.

I thought the commandment stated one can not have sex with anyone else but their spouse
