In general I don't like, and even reject the mere idea of an arranged marriage, but then, let's face that finding a soulmate may not always be that easy, the more that many young people have the tendency to rush into problems without thinking much on forehand. Well, we are still entitled to learn from our mistakes, and no need for anyone else to make them in our place... Liberty is also accepting the responsibility of our actions.

During a sojourn in Kashmir, many years ago, my wife and I stayed a few days in a village in the mountains, and we were invited to share dinner with the owner of the lodge. The man's daughter was there serving the meal, and the father at some moment said that his daughter was going to be married. I think arranged marriages have greater potential for lasting. Partly due to cultural norms, but also because it is in the best interest of the couple to make it work. I think the poor track record of individuals being left to choose for themselves speaks volumes about how legitimately bad they are at making decisions in life partners.

It's romantic to have the plot device of being trapped in an arranged, loveless marriage longing for true love, but it's superficial. The reality is that it often is better in the long run. Parents often do take the feelings of their children into consideration and the idea of a twelve year old marrying a sixty year old is really not that common. One of my friends lives in a culture where arranged matches are the norm and the couples are actually genuinely happy together.

I don't think it should be mandatory or forced, but I do think having a larger support network in choosing a life partner has a lot of value that is ignored or minimized.

western marriages don't work because people get married thinking they can divorce any time down the road whenever they feel like it.

arranged marriages have a much higher success rate because these couples tend to have lower expectations of marriage and also because divorce is more frowned upon by these cultures which leads to couples trying harder to make things work.

it might sound like western marriages be a better deal. but real truth is... if you keep divorcing and choosing a life where you have a revolving door of lovers throughout your life, you will never have a family and you will die all alone lonely and neglected.

Parents IF they want to do an arranged marriage for political power, power transfer, peace treaty or whatever bullsh*t the marriage itself should be seen as a sign of that however the individuals involved should have every right to opt out after it is done. Love is a choice, it isn’t forced upon you. If you don’t love someone, it is done!

It's a cultural thing where it's done nowadays, it's foreign to me but even in Europe it was still common not too long ago.

I don't hate the idea of it but there is definitely a level of vulnerability for the woman and a level of uncertainty as to what kind of woman the man will marry. I guess a lot of it is trusting the families (or who else arranged it). It has to be somewhat awkward at first

Yes, a lot of arranged marriages are forced upon people due to tradition. But there are also those who are okay with it.

I believe consensual arranged marriages are okay. But if a person explicitly states they do not want one. Then they should not be forced into it.

I do believe that a little help in point one to a potential mate is helpful, but not an arrangement between families. Certain cultures still do it, but I’d really like to see some statistics as to how they turn out. How well do they get along after say, 5-10, years. Better or worse?
