Because the understanding that marriage is for sex predates Christianity. Marriage is not fundamental to all Christian beliefs. Many gnostics believed sexual pleasure, alcohol & food consumption played a fundamental role in achieving Gnosis / Catharsis (their version of enlightenment).

This history is what defined Christianity as it appears in most forms now thanks to European philosophy & marriage customs being integrated into the European Christian understanding of what makes someone pious.

I told my husband on our first date that I could fo it myself but it was a nice touch, then I had him do it on other dates to his surprise, women can be contrary.
