The Death of the American Shopping Mall and Retail: Where did we go wrong?

All over the USA sights like these are becoming all too common. Abandoned malls and retail stores left empty after going out of business. 2017 is a bad year for retail. KMart and Sears at one time the nation's top two retailers are almost gone and a shell of their former selves. The Gap, Macy's, The Loft, Ann Taylor, Payless, Radio Shack, Bebe, The Limited,Gamestop,JCPenney, and Gander Mountain are all but on life support as well. At one time these companies were red hot, But what happened? How did long running juggernauts like Montgomery Ward,Ames, Circut City, Macy's,KMart,Sears, HHGregg,and Woolworths all cease to exist or are on life support?

In my opinion the biggest factor in this downfall is Online Shopping combined with the Hypermarket (Walmart and Target). People nowdays do their shopping online because it is easier that we can do it from home. Plus there are no pushy sales people, or even a lack of associates to factor into sales as we can now get stuff at a way cheaper price and not have to worry about overhead. Walmart and target make it easier that they are a one stop shop for everything.

Another factor is the failure to update to more modern business models. KMart and Sears have sometimes never upgraded their stores or looks despite stores being open snce the 1960s and 1970s. They used the same business practices and the merchandise is very dated to say the least. They have tried to reinvent themselves but It is not working.


My third factor and one that kinda hits to me personally is employment practices. Retail stores can and do have high turnover. One of the main reasons is the fact employees are told to be aggressive and push warranties and credit cards. As well to roam the sales floor to watch for people. Customers do not like this. Online customers can shop hassle free.

Why do you think American Malls and retail are dying? What are some stores you loved that are gone now? Who will be next to close up shop? One thing for sure I hope than oneday American retail can bounce back. But until then...
