Is it better to give someone a birthday present BEFORE or AFTER their birthday?

There is someone I know, and basically, I don't know if I'm able to give them a birthday gift on their birthday (due to our schedules being different), so I'm wondering would it be better to give him his birthday gift BEFORE his birthday or AFTER his birthday?

Or if u want to give them surprise, do it a week later after their birthday. Why? Cuz its surprise.. and cuz its late surprise, they dont expect anything if its gonna be surprise. And trust me they would really surprised!!

Like my friends did on my birthday this early August, and 10 days after my birthday, they asked me to go to the cafe just to hang w them at night.. and turned out they gave me birthday surprise and presents too..
