I take advantage of the opposite effect, when they misprint a sale. My local Grocery Outlet was having a fire sale on these P3 Protein packs, a little 1 oz or so snack pack, the gimmick is it's high in protein. They were selling them for 55c each, but they had mislabeled the amount, saying 55c for 10.5 oz or so (the size of a whole box of these things). So I loaded up my cart with as many as I thought I could reasonably fit in my fridge and consume before they went bad (about 60) and headed to the checkout with the rest of my groceries.
We have a law here (and probably other places as well) that if a store prints an advertised price, they have to make good on it, to prevent false advertising or bait-and-switch tactics. The cashier knew this, but the manager didn't. The manager said "sorry, that's a misprint, I will go change it and you cannot have ten for the price of one". But after she left, the cashier asked if I still wanted them and I said no, I'm not paying more, I put them in my cart because I thought I was getting the deal printed on the card. She said "I used to work somewhere else and it's illegal to not give you the price. I'm not supposed to, but I will." So I ended up getting that whole heap of snack packs for somewhere around $3-$4.
I was packing them in my lunches and making omelettes with them for months.

ha, yeah! There's a krogers by my house and one week they will have something like a jar of pickles for $1.99 and the next week, that jar of pickles will say sale with a yellow tag that says $2.99.
Crazy! Sometimes they will have an item, like frozen pizza for $2.99, but when you check out, it will ring up $6.99. Yeah, these stores purposely rip people off and make them think they are getting deals because they know a lot of people are stupid and don't know how to count anyway! I hate stupid people too and the ones that are stupid because they are lazy deserve to get taken advantage of, but still, it's morally wrong!

During the Muslim EID my grocery delivery app said I'd get at least 30% off on deliveries but when I compared prices to companies that were not offering the discounts, their prices were 50% lower then the company that was giving me a 30% discount on delivery. Aeropostale used to do that which is why their company popularity went down the drain. They would increase their prices by 50% and then give you 50% off.

That’s why I go to our local farmers. I know where my money goes.
if I must go to the markets…I just get what I need…not based on what’s on sale. I have to pay full price most of the time…so be it. Better quality stuff never goes on sale.10 Reply

They've gotten bad about that. Like all the yellow tags that make you think it's on sale when it's not. Even a lot of sales are such small discounts that it might as well not be a sale at all.
Sales and coupons used to be worthwhile. I used to regularly save $20 or more from coupons on a shopping trip of $70-80. Now I'm lucky to save $5 on a $150 shopping trip.
The latest thing is the 2 for the price of xx IF you buy at least 2. Until very recently, you got the discount even if you bought one.
Then of course there is downsizing. The price is the same, but smaller.

Tescos is the worst with their loyalty card scheme. They inflate their prices then offer them at a discount if you have the card. Problem is that discount just brings it down to what every other shop is charging.

All "loyalty" points cards are schemes. Not just grocery stores, but any store that offers such a card program. That's why they all do it, because it's lucrative to do so.

Haha, it always cracks me up. Or when they put up a deal for the item, and then you scan it at checkout, and there’s no deal! Love it 🙃

They just want you to know that they're thinking about you and most people will fall for their tricks. A lot of times it's used to draw people in. The biggest one that draws people in is hamburger freshly ground. When you cut into it and start making your hamburger patties or meatloaf. You find you've got some older meat mixed in with it. Meat is still good and is allowed to be sold. It's usually hitting the expiration date to dispose of it.

What the heck? No stores I have ever been to do that. I'd suggest going to another grocery store if you can. I wouldn't give my business to a company that does that to unsuspecting people.

Every supermarket does it here. You just don't buy that product.

@Razp_Sorbet Yikes. I'm sorry to hear that. That's really unscrupulous in my opinion. I'm a very savvy shopper, and I can honestly say I have never seen that before. It's quite obvious their intention is to purposely deceive people with bright red and yellow tags that look like sale tags, which prominently says 'EXTRA LOW!' in bold font on them. Sadly, I'm sure some people get taken advantage of by sneaky signage like that, and even if someone does realize they're being taken advantage of at the cashier, I'm sure half of them will just buy it anyway due to the pressure of other people waiting behind them. "Oh, it's $5.49? Okay, just ring it through." Honestly, it sounds like they're trying to even out the actual sales they do offer. That's not right.

I hear ya kid. There's a grocery store in my town that advertises sales like " buy four bottles pop at regular price and get the fifth one for a dollar less". Some sale. Big fucking deal. The pop is overpriced to begin with and by the time you pay the deposits on the bottles you aren't saving anything. Grocery merchants are nothing but profiteering scumbags now.

00 Reply Good old Pak n Save! Another thing to watch out for here is Countdown's expiry dates, particularly on dairy products. I've seen them trying to sell a lot of stuff that's way past the sell by date.

Nope they think we're stupid they do that all the time like today they had chips ahoy cookies buy on get one free but the cookies were $8.99 so you not getting anything free cause your paying for 2 right from the start
00 Reply That happens in the small town store a lot. Or if you're not careful you'll buy something at full price that has or is about to expiry.

Promotions are just a gimmick. The price will not be lowered, no matter what the item is
