Like would you rather a six bag of crisp that was 1, to turn into 4 bags for 1 or the six bags to now be 1.50?

And yes I know I'd rather it not change at all, I also know a lot of places increase the price while also decreasing the size. But if you could choose for all products going forward what would you choose?

I fucking hate "shrinkflation". That's bullshit.

By the way, here's a tip:

Whenever you see on packaging for a product something like "New Look! But same great ______", that means the package was changed for shrinkflation.

Here's an example:

I took this picture about 10 years ago before "shrinkflation" was a common term.

See the bottle on the right? It's taller so you think you are getting more. The bottle says "NEW" above the Old Spice label as in "New Look" packaging. But take a close look at the bottom...

Old packaging on the left, "NEW" packaging on the right.

The bottle on the left has "NET WT. 4.0 OZ". The bottle on the right has "NET WT. 3.75 OZ".

So, by changing the packaging, they give you (4-3.75)/4 = 0.0625 = 6.25% less than before... all for the same price if not a price increase.

So, keep your eyes open. This is happening all the time and the moment you see "New" or "New Look", that should be an immediate yellow if not red flag that they are now giving you less.

For us it was monster munch, they had one type back when dad was little, then had another type when I was little. Around 10/11 or so they did a whole new but old thing. The old crisps were larger in size and did have better flavouring and colours, but managed to reduce the amount inside.

My favourite is buying a multipack of flapjacks and seeing a finger width gap at the top, a whole gap in the cardboard for another little bar (used to hold 7 not holds 6), and not only that the thickness of each bar has decreased too.

Shrinkflation has been going on for years. Manufacturers keep the price the same (more or less) and decrease the size, amount or quality of the goods. From a marketing view, best is to increase the price, decrease the quantity, and justify that with an ad phrase like "New and Improved".

Yes, but the rate if shrinkflation had increased a lot in the last 3 years. So had the price of gas.

I'm more concerned with price per unit and spoilage. I buy toilet paper in the 128-roll equivalent, becaues it's not going to go bad. Minicucumbers I only get the 6-pack of, because they have to be used in a few days.

If the minicukes go from 6 for $4 to 5 for $4, that sucks but is acceptable. If they go down to 3 for $4, then nope, I'd rather get 6 for $5

Same amount / higher price seems more honest. Instead they do what @abc3643 talks about, which is annoying, especially if one cooks a lot and gets home only to realize the "new" package had 20% less and now you do not have enough of an ingredient for a recipe.
