Do you use CHECKS/CHEQUES?

In times in the not-so-distant past, people used checks (cheques) instead of cash, for many things, most notably to pay bills.

The use of checks (cheques) has decreased dramatically and now credit cards, online payments, electronic transfers and other methods are used, making checks (cheques) virtually obsolete.

Some people still write me checks. I never understood why. It's easy to do a wire or zelle or whatever. It's usually going from a business account to a business account so I don't really get what you think you're hiding from the government if that's supposed to be the angle...

I figure some people just like the opportunity to write in cursive 😂

I do not use online bill paying. I do not give stores access to my banking information either. If they don't want to take my check I will go someplace else.

@exitseven I hear what you're saying, but your personal info (name, address, phone number) and banking info (bank name, location, routing number) are all on the check. FYI... I occasionally use checks but prefer online transfers (a push, not a pull) from my bank when paying bills.

Yes, they are on the check but I will not let stores take money out of my account.

I know you are aware how bad crime is getting and that criminals will do anything for money.

Well, what's happening now and for a while is they are stealing the U. S. Mail. They have ways of getting into mailboxes and stealing the mail. They will even steal the mail off of the mail carriers truck - try and trays of mail. They take mail out of people's home mailboxes - like the kind in rural areas where they put their outgoing mail and flip up the cute red flag to let the mail carrier know they have outgoing mail.
So, naturally when you send a check in the mail to pay a utility bill or something, they know there's a check in the envelope. So when they steal the mail they get all the checks they can and put them in this liquid solution stuff and it removes the ink you wrote from your check. Then they write your check with anything they want to!!!
It happened to me with one of my bills. They never received my check so I had to pay the bill twice. Lucky for me it didn't go any further than that. But I was out $59 which is a lot to me.
They have special writing pens at the office supply store that the ink won't come off of your check. Might want to buy a couple of them.

Also I received in my junk mail today an advertisement to order checks from some random check company, not a bank. So, anyone that get's a check from you can use all of your information off your check and order a whole lotta checks with your information and routing number etc., and have a field day with your checks.

Just sayin'.

@sage2021 Yes, check washing is a thing but usually with a check it is way too much work to go through for a 59 dollar charge.

I think you're missing the point here.
If you have stacks of stolen checks it all adds up and they rewrite any amount they want on the check after they wash them.
$59 I was out was just an example that someone probably stole the mail that had my check in it.
Do what you want. Don't bother to get the pens I suggested either. Ok?

@sage2021 I get what you are saying. I would call the bank after I found out about the first check. They will stop all future checks. Commerce is tough these days and there is no foolproof method all we can do is try to minimize the risk.
I teach a computer security class and the systems can be secure but most companies do not want to spend the money to implement adequate security.

I've never used a cheque before and don't know how to write one.

If I need to pay, I use an e transfer.

And if I am paying a friend or family I do direct bank deposits or give cash since they do not need paper records of my money transfers.

I never noticed that. Normally letters are written in Welsh on one side and English on the other, I wonder if cheques are too.

As for me I like paper trails & as for my bills I still use checks & with my employer I still get a paper payroll check instead of direct deposit. When I’m out & about all my purchases are by credit card & when that bill comes in I go over to the bank I have my credit card with & I hand them a check.

Nah, I stick to cheque drops, the steroid which some people call methyltren for some reason. It's just an ingredient in my regular fapmaster quest rituals. I mix it with homemade lube as my route of administration.

These things went the way of the dinosaurus in the early 1990's. I was very young when my parents last used them, and now most people here don't even know what cheques are.

Yes I do for some things, although I pay most recurring bills electronically. When I’m working I write quite a few.

Not often at all. The community that I live in has special events every now and then and they require check for payment. Or if a contractor does some work for me I'll pay by check.

A cancelled check is societally-accepted redemption proof of a 'promissory note' payment of an agreed-upon value for goods exchanged or services rendered.

I probably write maybe a dozen checks a year. Usually for a babysitter, but even that is becoming more rare with Venmo.

I haven't used a cheque in at least 15 years. I used to have to send in a cancelled cheque to set up repetitive payments like rent, but I haven't had to do that in a long time.
