Do you buy furniture second hand?

My partner and I have had some great luck recently with second hand purchases.

Most recent purchase for $70 was a lovely solid mahogany cabinet which we are using as a tv console. It's beautiful. I still need to polish up the knobs (they're brass!) . We are currently bidding on a second sofa to hopefully finish off our living room area!

Anyone else have any furniture steals?

If it's solid as in wood, metal, glass, etc. then I don't mind buying furniture second hand or even picking it up from the garbage on the side of the road if it's in great condition. If it's soft, like a bed mattress or a sofa, then no I buy them new. Solid surfaces you can clean up and polish. Soft fabrics can house bugs, bodily fluids, odors, etc.

If it was something like a wood chair with a fabric pillow on top, if it was nice enough and cheep enough I might pick it up and reupholster the pillows.

Nope, I actually never bought it second hand and might not even in future as well.
I like my stuff including furniture first hand.
Just how I like my coffee: freshly brewed and without any previous owners lol.
Gotta avoid any unwanted "baggage," you know?

I can understand that. I don't have the money to buy first hand and also it's better for the environment as a bonus

That's a difficult scenario then. If it's worth it and you like it, you should go for it. Nothing like a good investment.

For the most part, I try to. But it can be very hard to find exactly what I’m looking for. I think maybe 2/3 of my house furniture is second hand bought or passed on to me.

Sure. It helps to live in an area with lots of nice used stuff. But you can only buy so much unless you're starting a store. Typical deals I get is paying $300 for something worth $3k+. But even getting something worth $300 for $100 is a good deal.

Yeah, but just stuff without mattresses and cushions. That stuff is essentially squishy petri dishes; chock full of dead skin, fungi, bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Sleeping on a used mattress and/or pillow is as bad as sleeping in a dumpster. Ell oh ell! And yes, that includes hotel beds!

I bought a nice IKEA double wardrobe for 300 instead of 900€. Other cupboards from the 1950s I got free from my grandparents house. I also bought a used work desk from a second hand store for a few bucks.

Not only do I buy it second hand, as a former mover in unvie6like half of my furniture were scored for free from customers who didn't want it.

Very efficient way to get stuff if you aren't trying to pretend your living space belongs on YouTube.

Yes, I do at times , if it’s still in good condition or just enough that I know I can fix it up, and the price is right? Than why not?

I bought dome second hand stuff for my summer house the kitchen set is good but the futon I got is junk.

I haven't in a while, but I've done it in the past. Depends on what is too. I've bought 2nd hand that could be refinished and turned into something beautiful again.

No, but we occasionally sell our old furniture or give it to Goodwill to sell.

I wouldn't care either way, but my missus hates anything second hand. She's a bit OCD about it! We have to get everything new!

My dad who was a professional carpenter taught me a lot about it when I was young. So I can quite make some basic furniture on my own. The wood is not free though

yep! do it! its good to give furniture a second life, it saves you money or gives you something unique and you can usually sell it when you're done
