What factors into your decision when making a big purchase such as a car or house?

Well for a house, I rent.

But a car, there's really only one glaring thing that determines when it's time for me to buy a new car. And that's when the repairs exceed the overall value of the car. It's almost always cheaper to repair an old car then to buy a new (er) one. I say new (er) because I ALWAYS by used. I rule i live by that I MIGHT have to change with my next car purchase, as the pandemic has made the used car market ridiculously overpriced.
