I sent my boyfriend $80 for his birthday, and he’s upset?

We’re long distance, dating for a year and a half. I tried for a couple of hours to come up with an engraving for a watch for him, but he ended up not liking how the watch looked. Then I decided to look up polo shirts (since I know he likes them) and one I liked was about 74 dollars, so I just sent him 80 cuz I couldn’t buy it for him from my location.

First he said he didn’t want money as a gift, especially from me. But now he seems to be suggesting that people usually send others a 20, 50 or 100 as a gift, and that 80 is a random number. And he apparently feels hurt because apparently I don’t care and love him enough to send 100.

I feel like he’s being ridiculous and it was a very nice gesture on my part. Any thoughts? Is he right about this?
