Depends, I guess. If it’s merely a kind suggestion of “hey, I see you have this item on your wishlist, what about this other thing thats similar? Would you prefer this or the item on your wishlist?”, then I don’t see an issue as you’re just providing another option and not pressuring the person into changing their mind.


But if you’re like my mom, who tries to control what everyone else buys, then it’s not acceptable. Most recent example.. I’m very pregnant and regular underwear doesn’t fit me anymore, I have to buy maternity undies. I had my eye on a 3 pack that have a split waistband in the front to make space for my belly. My mom literally spent half an hour trying to talk me out of it. “They won’t last long” thats fine, i only need them while im pregnant. “They’re not cotton so they won’t be breathable” thats fine, I only need them while im pregnant. “You should buy these different undies instead” mom, those aren’t maternity undies, they won’t fit me. “You could probably find better maternity underwear at another store” sure, for double the price.


In the end I had to say “look, it’s not your money, these are the undies that I want, you need to butt out” and she finally stopped. She does it with literally ANY PURCHASE. I can’t discuss anything that I want to buy with her because she will nitpick every little thing about it or try to convince me to buy a different type of item, even though none of it affects her.

The image I have in my head of someone is rarely accurate to who they actually are. I would honestly appreciate a wishlist from others because at least then I know I’m not getting them something they’ll just get rid of once I’m not looking.
