I’m looking at my first new car and I’d really appreciate some comments on the Honda CRV.

The CRV and the Toyota RAV-4 are both excellent cars (and are so close in size and design that they are nearly twins) and very comfortable for 4 adults. I have bought three of them for my extended family and they have all been very reliable and highly rated. My parents have had a 2015 RAV-4 since 2019 and it's their favorite car they ever had. My sister had a 2004 RAV-4 and put 270,000 miles on it before she catalytic converter needed to be replaced, and she gave it to her son-in-law's sister, who got the cat replaced, and has been driving it for about 7 years now.
And I got a 2012 CRV for my godmother and she absolutely loves it as well. Hers has about 180,000 miles now and runs like a top.
Now, having said all that, there is no way I would recommend buying a brand new car unless you can really easily afford it. You can buy one that is 3-5 years old at a huge savings and as long as it wasn't ratted out, it's going to have many years ahead of it. With a new car, you lose 30% of the value just driving it off the lot, and it will only get worse from there. A 5 year old car with 60,000 miles on it and in like new condition will cost about half of a new one, maybe less if you aren't in a huge hurry. And it will be good for 10+ years.
Yes. I have one. Reasonably fuel efficient. And Hondas run forever. It's a big car though, by Australian standards. Good for families because you can throw pretty much everything you own in the back. If you are single/couple you can probably get something cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.
I actually meant HRV. It’s smaller.
Before that we had a Honda Civic. Never had a single problem with it. I would be hard to convince to buy anything other than a Honda, at least in internal combustion cars.
The CRV is Honda's sales leader in the US for a reason with 404,000 units sold in 2025. It's relatively inexpensive to buy and own. It really does provide some utility for the average person. And it delivers reliability and durability in a nice comfy package. It also holds its value well when it comes times to sell or trade it.
An EX midlevel trim is about $33K and the Sport Touring Hybrid version tops the lineup at $42.5K
It's a very good car. But the question is if it's a good car for you. What do you need or want. The CRV is no performance car. It's really a 4 passenger vehicle. And the load rating (850 lbs) and tow rating (1,500 lbs) are low. And it's not exciting unless you think no maintenance problems or breakdowns is exciting. I do. And no one ever accused the CRV of being beautiful or sexy looking.
Buy American cars. I would recommend a powerhouse a Dodge Challenger. They’re really Sporty.
Yeah. How good are they in snow?
You probably have to get snow tires with the chain if you get a lot of snow
Or I could just get four wheel drive
Yes, you can if you would like
No Honda has 4 wheel drive. Honda sells all wheel drive vehicles. And no, you don't need tire chains unless you're going skiing in the Rockies. Buy a set of dedicated snow tires like Bridgestone Blizzaks or Michelen X-Ice. They are fantastic in snow and ice. But you can't run them in summer.
I own a 2020 Honda CR-V hybrid and I've been happy with it. 35 MPG, no maintenance problems, handles fairly well, can haul almost anything I want to haul -- skis fit inside with one seat folded down. We don't put many miles on it, only about 5,000 per year because we live in Seattle and nothing we do is very far.
You will not go wrong with a Honda but that one is kind of a soccer mom's car so you might want a sportier one. But if you like it, you like it. Also you can buy older ones if you want to save some dosh because they last forever.
I actually just realized I meant to put HRV.
that's cuter for sure especially some of the colors
I like the dark grey.
That was the first car my company supplied me with. It was a decent car.
Wym decent?
It was reliable and comfortable to drive.
It is a car that generally gets very good reviews, but are you sure you want an SUV?
I have a rav4. I live in New York so I get snow.
If you are comfortable with an SUV, that is an important factor. Are you not happy with the Rav 4?
No I like my rav but I really want something new. It’s got a lot of miles and I’d feel more comfortable with something new. I was looking last spring and really like the HRV but I thought to wait till later in the year when they’re trying to get rid of the 2026 stuff.
Why not a new Rav 4?
I heard Hondas are better. That’s why I’m asking. I’m nervous about buying a car so I want to be sure.
Pay for a one year subscription to Consumer Reports and read their online review of those cars. There are also tons of car reviews on YT. I think the Rav 4 and the CR-V both get high marks for reliability and for maintaining their value over time.
There are also many YT videos that will suggest how you approach a car dealership so that you get the best deal.

I can recommend Honda, Nissan and Toyota, especially used.
@DryGermanGuy not VW?
@Kelly6
Sure, VW as well. But does she want to spend the extra money in the United States?
So you think Honda is good?
I know they are good. I had a Honda Accord clone for almost ten years.
Thanks
Yes. Though take a look at where it was manufactured. If mexico dont buy. He might have the badge but not the build quality
How do I know?
Yeah. Toyotas and Hondas are the only cars I would ever consider buying.
Yes. Tough to go wrong with a Honda. I am still driving a 2001 Civic. It will not die.
I don't know about the CR-V, but I really liked Hondas. I think it's the most common car I've had? They are reliable and comfy and they didn't break the bank
The Honda CRV is a nice car, but a bit on the expensive side for a first car. I might suggest the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla as a first car.
A good s. u. v gerdy, depending on which model too, Japanese cars are great! 🦒
Yeah its a good one
Thanks.
Any Honda is a good car
Hard to argue with Honda, depending on the year.
Can’t go wrong with a Honda
yeah not bad
