Everyone loves a good ghost story, that shudder thinking about it, we pay lots of money to watch movies and buy books with them. It just so happens that I can share some personal stories with ghosts, not mine, but ones that have happened to friends and family. I have never had one myself but I was in the house during the time one happened. Without further ado, let's begin. (I have sorted them in order of how dramatic they are starting from least)
1. The Presence in the Hotel Room.
This one happened to my friend's older sister whom I will call Siobhan.
She had had a long journey from the South coast of England, she needed somewhere to rest so she found the name of a good, cheap hotel nearby and checked in. As she entered the room with her things, she felt terrible. There was something so wrong here. She got ready for bed and felt like there was a strange woman standing behind her the whole time. She went to sleep and immediately started dreaming. She got out of her bed, walked into the bathroom, looked into the mirror, and there was a hideous woman looking at her. (No, I know what you are thinking. Siobhan is really pretty.) Siobhan felt this woman hating her, wanting her. She screamed and ran back into her room. The sleeping Siobhan became delirious and dreams and reality became warped. She could not see the woman but could feel her trying to do something awful. She started pushing at her mentally and it became a struggle. Siobhan won, woke up, and the feeling was gone. The room felt great.
2. The Phantom Cyclist.
My Gran's husband, Phil, was driving at night in the Dorset countryside on a dark lane when he noticed a cyclist on a rickety bike riding behind him. This startled him because he had seen him pull out. It must have been from a dark corner. Phil kept his eye on the cyclist and sped up a bit. Suddenly, the cyclist started vanishing into the road, he was gone for a moment and then started rising up again. Phil sped up and stopped at a pub to use the restroom. He spoke to some guys there about it and they told him that ghost was a regular sight and that there used to be a dip in the road when the cyclist was alive so that was why he vanished and reappeared.
3. The Marnhull Poltergeist
Marnhull is a village in North Dorset which is the setting for much of Tess of the d'Ubervilles. Again, we are talking about Phil and my Gran. They lived in a house there that used to be part of a bigger house. The big house was split up into three and my Gran's was the one that had had the main staircase. Things moved all the time, doorknobs, drapes were jiggled around wildly when there was no wind or windows open. My Gran spoke to one of the neighbours who had lived in the village for a long time. He explained that there had been a fight between the woman that lived in the big house, (he lived in one of the end sections) and someone from one of the others. They did not talk for years even though they had been good friends. One day, the woman in the other house noticed there was something wrong. The other one had not come outside to feed her cat all that day which was done ritually. She did not see her at all that day, neither had she heard any news of her going away. She ran to find out what the trouble was and found her dead on the top of her stairs. This was the ghost that haunted the house.
My Gran and Phil had a guest over one evening and they were telling him about all the strange happenings. The guest had this look of pure disbelief written across his face and was just about to say something when an ornamental plate flew off the wall past him and smashed close by.
4. Grabbed
So my family live in this tourism village in this little cottage. Some things happened with our renovation that meant we were required to move into another house in the village for a short time. We kind of liked this house, it had 3 bathrooms instead of the 1, a dining room and massive kitchen when ours were mashed together and tiny. And best of all we all got our own bedroom. My sister's room was tiny, the oldest looking, and light struggled to fill the room, even in daytime. She started getting creeped out and felt a presence, much like that Siobhan, but this time it was not malevolent. One night, my siblings, mum, and I were sat in the living room watching a movie and our dad had had a long day so he went up to bed. He seemed a little out of sorts the next day, and the one after, and on the third day, he told us why. On that night, he had been drifting off when he suddenly felt a hand grab him by the neck and another pressing him on the forehead. The ghost was in bed with him. He shook it off and it vanished. I have no idea why he went to sleep straight away, I would be scared.
That is not the only haunting in my village, there is a pub pantry whose light keeps being turned on, they have checked, nobody goes down there, they switch the light off every night. They rewired the room but it still happened. Another house on the outskirts has several ghosts, one of them being this old woman that lurks in corners.
I have no idea how people live in these circumstances, it must be because they are full English and I am only half. If you have any good ghost stories, please share them in the opinions!
