Prejudice is when one judges someone, or a group of people based on false or no information. There are many sad things people do because of prejudice. Some people are very lonely. And sadly, sometimes people commit suicide because since they are alone they think, what’s the point of living.
There are several causes that can lead to prejudice. One cause may be having the wrong impression of someone. An example of that is when someone gives you wrong information on a group. I once read a book that had a girl no one talked to because of a rumor that she was a nerd and really mean; but one day a boy started talking to her and found that she was actually really nice and fun to talk with. It is not fair to judge a person before getting to know him or her. Another cause of prejudice is when someone is judged by their looks. Sometimes people may look different than how they really act. I once saw a movie where the main character changed how she looked and everybody suddenly was nice to her. It is not fair to judge a person by his or her appearance.
Sadly, prejudice can also be spread by inheritance. Some parents have grudges that carry on through their children. These grudges may be about ethnicity or family history. For example, if a person is running against another person in an election, their sons and daughters may also be affected in some way. If the kids form grudges against each other because of their parents’ political views, think about how mean they could be to each other. More commonly, there maybe who when 2 adults, when they were younger, had a fight and now don’t like each other. Not only does one adult hate the other adult and maybe their children, but they may also expect their own children not to like their enemy, which is unfair to the children.

Prejudice also has many effects. One effect is that someone can start to become a lonely, withdrawn person because everybody thinks this person is mean. Sometimes that person even starts to believe they are a loser, so they start acting like it. There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom by Louis Sacher, is about a boy who started out as a quiet loner, but who starts becoming meaner and meaner. He goes to a therapist and discovers he is an actually a nice person on the inside, but he is letting others affect his self-image and behavior.
As you can see, prejudice is an attitude that can be caused by forming wrong impressions, or through inheritance, and the effect is that people get hurt and feel bad. Before anyone judges a new face for any reason, they should go and talk to the person and maybe they will become good friends, despite any differences!
