The different types of racism

Admitedly, I used to be on the side that believed white people can't experience racism. I realise now, what a doofus I was. Of course white people experience racism. The kind of racism that is defined when you google "racism". So, I thought I'd make a MyTake on the different types of racism so you don't have the same silly beliefs I previously had.

P.S. - I sincerely apologise to all of the white people I belittled and was racist too, I spent too much time on tumblr.

1 - "Every day racism"

"Every day racism" is a type of racism that are incidents that aren't necessarily violent or consciously malicious but perpetuate negative stereotypes about different groups through jokes and offhand remarks.

2 - General racism

This is the kind of racism that is the belief that certain races are superior/inferior to other races. This is the kind of racism that is defined when you type "racism definiton" into google. A lot of tumblr users are under the belief that non-whites can't be racist to white people, but only prejudiced. They say all of this, without referring to a fucking dictionary. Or they straight up deny the fact that the dictionary is right and they are not.

3 - Institutionalised racism

Systematic racism is the type of racism that tumblr users should be refering to when they say "white people can't experience racism"/"reverse racism doesn't exist". In countries like the US and UK, white people are the "privileged" group. Meaning they have advantages that other races do not in certain areas of society like education, work, how they are treated by the government etc.

4 - Internalised racism

"Self hating" racism is where people who have experienced racism believe that certain stereotypes and prejudices are valid. They may hate themselves for something they can't control, and see themselves as "lesser" somehow. Sometimes they even oppress others of the same race as them, maybe to try and make up for having XYZ coloured skin.

It used to be people said reverse racism to mean your last one, racism against oneself, but around 08 the gop repurposed it to mean racism against majority (to subtly hint to America's psyche that racism against minority was normal. Clever, eh?).

I would also like to add misplaced or accidental racism, wherein people think they're being positive, yet still seeing another race as separate or stereotyped. Example: "I ain't got nothin against Mexicans. They're hard workers!" Example 2: "It's so refreshing to see interracial couples. Tell me, what made you decide to try an ethnic?" This racism does not come from hate, but from ignorance. The user is non violent and attempts to be culturally sensitive, yet fails due to non hostile yet equally damaging ideas.

Great take. Many people believe that racism only consitutes to things like black people being called monkey in the street or ethnic minorities being told to 'fuck off home'. But it's far deeper than that. I actually find the more covert forms of racism to be the most damaging because they largely go unnoticed.

The reason you believed white people cannot experience racism is the same reason you still believe in “white privilege”. People who have an interest in perpetuating a stereotype will continue to push this nonsense because no one challenges them. To do so means you earn the instant label of being a racist yourself. If you have an opinion that varies from the politically correct dujour of the day you are immediately attacked, labeled and bullied.

I have witnessed and been affected by all forms of racism. I’ve seen the “good ole boys” as well as the “girls only club”, people of one race protect and enable their own kind while oppressing all others. This is and has been human nature since the dawn of time. If it’s not geographic boundaries, religion or ethnicity, humans fall back to skin color as a differentiator.

It is what it is, we will never change this. Yanking down flags, banning 1980s TV shows, posting #blacklivesmatter on social media only makes you feel good and does nothing to change reality nor does it help educate people on how to cope with the effects.

The politically correct crowd have made it impossible to have a dialog about racism because any thoughts or opinions that do not fit their dogma do not want to be heard. The events at Mizzou are a prime example. A lot of questions swirl around what actually happened but just simply asking is enough to get attacked and labeled a racist.

I keep hearing about this “white privilege” and I keep waiting to receive the benefits from it. Does anyone know if this is something that just shows up at my door or do I need to apply for it somewhere? Does it not happen for me because technically I am Native American mixed with early 20th Century immigrants so I am not truly an “Anglo-Saxon” pure bred Pilgrim? I am so confused by all of these labels…

We have allowed ourselves to become divided along “self identity” hyphenated labels and led to believe we are special because of these labels and that everyone else must be forced to adhere to our opinion. This is ass backward, if we as a society want to be truly “color blind” then we need to stop believing that we are owed something, we are special or have a right to force others to comply with our opinions and instead find those things we have in common and listen to what others believe. We cannot become a melting pot when everyone wants to treated differently and are offended by every stupid little thing.

To my knowledge, "white privilege" doesn't mean you get a free mansion, car and duffle bag of cash every year or whatever, it means you get treated better than other races in certain aspects of society, like police, education, job interviews, scholarships etc.

Personally, I don't think becoming a"colour-blind society" would do any good. Not treating someone differently because of their skin, I agree with but outright ignoring skin colour just ignores certain issues.

I don't know what happened at the Mizzou university, but the protesters didn't help their argument by refusing the photographer of his 1st amendment right. Some of their demands are ridiculous too, sounds like they came straight from a tumblr blog.

This is what I mean by the nebulous term “white privilege”. It is a term intentionally used to mislead. One is implying that I, solely for being white, have some form of benefit that cannot be actually identified or proven. “White privilege” is nothing more than a biased assumption and method to demean my accomplishments based solely on my skin color…which is by definition racism.
“outright ignoring skin colour just ignores certain issues”. First you said “colour” so we all now know you aren’t American ;-)
So what’s the problem with ignoring skin color? I mean this is what someone famous once said:
“I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
You simply cannot have “equal” if everyone wants to be self-identified as different. There should be no special rules or extra privilege for being different.

As an example, where I work you can add a spouse to your insurance policy but you have to be legally married and provide documentation. However, if you are in a “same sex domestic partner” relationship you do not have to be married and only have to affirm that you have cohabitated for at least 6 months. So a guy and a girl who have lived together for 5 years do not have access to the same benefits as two guys who have lived together for 6 months.

That right there is institutionalized discrimination but our society is so stupid right now that the environment does not allow the guy and girl to make a complaint without being attacked. They just have to live with being discriminated against.

It is either equally fair for all or it is not regardless of any other factor such as race, sexuality, etc.

Regarding your quoting of MLK, I agree with what he said. People shouldn't be judged on their skin colour, but that doesn't mean skin colour should be ignored. Also, doesn't mean people should get special privileges or be discriminated against for something they have no control over, like skin colour, gender or sexual orientation or what have you.

i dont think just looking at a definition in the dictionary automatically leads to a leap in consciousness.

interestingly in many areas, people are constantly disregarding dictionary definitions when it suits them. in this case dictionary definitions are being used to support a case.. it works the other way more frequently. and in those instances, it becomes a matter of what people are commonly referring to, not a 'literal definition'. i of course would vote in favor of literal definitions bc if definitions mean nothing what is language. thats not to say that my definitions have not become archaic and anachronistic. ike the blatantly sexist and racist definitions which are problematic. how do you rely on definitions to illustrate bigotry when many definitions themselves are exemplitive of bigotry.

out of curiosity, did anything actually happen to alter your perspective? is there an event you're thinking of that blatantly illustrates white people being discriminated against as a class?

Nope. No mind-altering experience. I just picked up a dictionary, stopped looking at white people (and men in general) as a class, and stopped spending so much time on tumblr.

Personally I disagree that white people are the privileged group in the UK- I don't know so much about the US. In the UK, (don't quote me but) I'm 90% sure that there are laws to say that a certain percentage of workforces must be made up of ethnic minorities. White people have equal educational rights to those of other races. In fact, in some schools now (especially in cities) white children are actually 'the minority' as such. And since it's compulsory to stay in education until you're 18, all kids have a fairly equal one. The Government treats everyone the same- they have to because the have to be diplomatic! Everyone of any race has exactly the same educational entitlements, as well as those concerning work and the government.
Of course, there are still some racists about- but that's not privilege... I've never felt that I, as a non-white person, is any less privileged than any white person in Britain...

I feel the same too, but there is still a few racists/xenophobes here and there but no institutional racism, as far as I know. I feel that white people are privileged in the sense that they don't have to deal with racist people more frequently, and they don't have to deal with ignorance that is most of the time unintentional. But compared to America, the UK is great. The only xenophobia that is a real problem here is against West Asians, Muslims, Sikhs etc.

I haven't been able to find anything about making sure a certain percentage of ethnic minorities are in a workplace, but I'll have to look more into it.

The summary of this take should be, sorry white people. Here are some definitions of racism. Doesn't really explain why you think white people experience racism which seemed to be your premise or why you're apologizing now, other then you've spent far too much time on the internet, in your words. I'm not sure anyone racist or not, is going to look at this and go, my God, that thing was racist, let me change my ways. It's more like reading the definition of a banana. Okay, its a banana, and?

People are just scared of what is different. It's a survival tool from our earliest days. Having a pop at skin colour is just the most obvious way to express it. Racism, class discrimination, religious discrimination. Just different flavours of the same fear of the unknown. If aliens came out of a spaceship and moved in next door would you incite them round for a beer? No chance. Your survival instincts wouldn't allow it until you were familiarised with the situation.
