Discrimination Against Whites: It DOES Exist!

I have a more unique work situation than most people do. I am one of the few white people among a workplace that is full of mostly African American/Blacks (wasn't sure which term to use since either one can be seen as offensive, depending on the person). I think that maybe the reason for that is that it is a warehouse/production job and whites don't often want to deal with this kind of work. That being said, I have come to learn that there is such a thing as discrimination/racism against whites.

It started with my first week there. I was assigned to a group of older African American/Black women who seemed to hate me from the start. Even the supervisor had asked me why I didn't just ask my daddy for money instead of getting a job. In reality I didn't have a daddy figure growing up. I was born to a teen mom who struggled to raise my brother and I and life wasn't easy. Things were never handed to me, contrary to the stereotypical 'spoiled , rich white girl' view that many African American/Black women seemed to have. I had to work hard for everything that I have. I realize that some white girls are that way but that doesn't mean that we all are. I think because I was the new girl I attracted a few of the guys, which further angered the women.

Oh, now I wanted to steal away all their men (or so they thought)! Suddenly I was 'the white whore' that was after all the men and I had graffiti rumors about me on the bathroom wall of the women's restroom as well as spread around at work. I once asked one of the women why she hated me so much. She told me that it's because my people enslaved her people and that she would never forgive white people for that. This has seemed to be a common thing at work, them bringing slavery into everything. It has come to the point where I just keep to myself to avoid any race drama, do my job, and when it's time to leave clock out.

Now, I am in no way dismissing the horrible things that African American/Black people faced in the past. I don't agree with slavery and I feel bad that their ancestors had to go through it. I really wish that there had never been a such thing as slavery. However I feel like every day I am made to feel guilty about something that happened before I was ever even born. No matter how much work I do, nothing is never good enough. I am forced to work mandatory overtime including weekends all the time and while others can refuse, I cannot. It turns into a, 'Oh, that's right. You're white. You don't need to work. You have daddy's money to turn to'. I guess I have some idea of how an African American/Black feels when they have to work in a predominantly white workplace.

It's like no matter how hard you try, you're always the outsider. It's not a good feeling at all.
