The first nation in the world to make seat belts compulsory by law was Czechoslovakia in 1969. France followed in 1973. Other European countries followed. In Italy where I live, they have been installed since 1977, before they were an expensive option, they have been mandatory since 1988, but only in the front seats, and since 2006 also in the rear seats.
In the United States of America, the first state to declare them mandatory was New Work in 1984, however, even today, they are only mandatory in 26 states.

@ODC2112 Seat belts have been around since the 1930s. In the 1950s the three point seat belt was innovated and they started showing up in vehicles in the 1960s but were not mandatory at first. The first seat belt law was a federal law, Title 49 of the United States Code, Chapter 301, Motor Safety Standard, which took effect on January 1, 1968, that required all vehicles (except buses) to be fitted with seat belts in all designated seating positions. I lived through the 1980s. We had seat belts and worse them. You obviously didn't. Welcome to Earth.
