What's the appeal in dreadlocks?

I just saw a girl with a really pretty face but a head of dreadlocks that basically ruined her entire look. I just think it's a really unattractive unclean seeming high maintainance style on both genders.

Do you find dreadlocks attractive unattractive or neutral? Why?

There's the misconception that you can't wash your hair when you have locks or whatever.

That's not true, at all. Washing and drying your hair actually accelerates the knotting process. Oily hair will take longer to tangle.

And no, you don't need to use wax, or eggs or mayonnaise or whatever. Those processes are gross and are bad for the locks. A common way of doing it is with a crochet needle. You can even do it the natural way and simply don't comb your hair, it will tangle naturally (you just have to rip it into sections now and then)(and yes, it works with white people hair too)

Dreadlocks can reflect your interests and personality. Or your beliefs. That's the appeal in it I'd say. It's not necessarily the aesthetic past.

They are clean if you know how to take care of them.

Ehhh plenty of people don`t wash their hair after getting it fixed. Even if it`s not dreadlocks. Some wash their hair every so often and re twist them.

I thought you meant the dreadlocks themselves though and not the process. Heck a girl having something equal to a toaster on her head doesn`t sound all that attractive to me either LOL.

It's not gross just because people don't wash their hair. That's a very close-minded statement if you ask me. As a black female, I can't just go washing my hair all willy nilly like white, Asian or hispanic people. I can't. If I want to wear my hair straight then I can't wash it until the next time I get my hair done which could take a month, tops.

But I personally seen the beauty in them. Yyouve got to dig deeper to find the spirituality behind the locks, its actually a very enlightening thing to see, not everyone follows the rastafari for the spiritual aspects, sometime its purely cosmetical.

Not all dreadlocks look great tho. Some look like total shit and seem like you don't wash or haven't taken a shower in years.

At the same time there are some people in America at least who only do it for fashion. Though even that you can consider culture in some regard.

They're losing jobs for their locs, I've known this to happen. They're being turned down because they're doing their own culture! And you are saying... I think locs are unattractive. mmm, yeah well. White people's so-called dreads tend to be fucked up, lol. They dont know how to them and our hair isn't meant for it anyway. It gets moldy. We used to do a similar thing in old Ireland, my ancestors, but very different. We did it with limestone and weird shit lol. But thats lost to time.
